The newest development in that coal situation comes from Kentucky. It concerns the coal fields of Harlan County, scene of so much quarreling and bloodshed. Judge Ball of Harlan County wrote a letter to Governor Happy Chandler. He told the Kentucky Governor that seventy-five per cent of the Harlan County miners were willing to go back to work, provided they were given protection. And the Judge added: ^Conditions in HarlanCounty have gradually grown worse during the past few weeks and have now become so serious as to warrant a request for protection from the state.” Acting upon that information. Governor Happy announced what he would do. He’ll send the National Guard ®# Harlan County "to preserve la* and order and to keep peace among its citizens" mm] COAL - 2 if the mines aren’t opened by Monday. Tempers rose to boiling point and one remark got the dander of no less a celebrity than Ex-Governor Landon of Kansas City, Ex-Republican candidate for president. Mr. Landon led the Methodists who objected to incorporating that approval of conscientious objectors into the social creed of the United Methodist Church. Up spoke a clergyman from Orange, New Jersey, who said; nDid you notice that everyone opposed to this resolution is either bald-headed or gray haired?” Mr. Landon of Kansas jumped back on the platform. With anger in his face and voice, he cried into the microphone: "That last remark was a cowardly one.” And he continued: ”1 respect the emotional convictions of those who favor this paragraph but they should, respect the patriotism of those who oppose it.” Thereafter Mr. Landon*s party lost, the conscientious objector clause was approved by the conference*as-a-whole along with a comprehensive social creed.
