His first message to the Seventy-Fifth Congress? led everybody to believe that he meditated no campaign to curb the Supreme Court. Not for the present, at any rate. The tone and text of his message indicated that moral persuasion rather than legislative force would be used upon the members of that high tribunal. Now it seems we misunderstood him.( Mr. Roosevelt is going to hold a conference ?/ith congressional leaders to discuss laws to curtail the veto power of the justices on legislation^) But supposing the justices pronounce the laws to curtail their powers unconstitutional What would happen then? A visit of Senator Minton of Indiana to the White House broke this news to the astonished capital. "That," said Senator Minton, "is one way we can obtain legislation we have been seeking." And he added: "Everything wd have been fighting to get around today was the result of conference with the President. Army Medical Corps wipe out yellow fever. That was way back in Nineteen Hundred, when epidemics were killing American soldiers by the hundreds in Cuba, also civilians by the thousands in New Orleans and other southern ports. A great surgeon. Major Walter Reed of the Army Medical Corps, became imbued with the idea that yellow fever was spread by mosquitoe. bite. But he had to prove it. Half a dozen soldiers offered themselves as subjects for the experiment. It was the first time in medical science that human beings were used as guinea pigs like that. And it was brilliantly successful, and without casualties. After a lapse of years. Congress awarded a Medal of Honor to those human guinea pigs. One of those Congressional Medal of Honor men is John J, Moran, Managing Director of the Sunoco Compania of Cuba. Presently the storm became a blizzard* Drifts covered the road and before long the car stalled when the ■gasoline gave out* For three nights and two days the blizzard blew and raged around that stalled motor car, all six people huddling together with their two cats and one dog, with sub-zero temperature out­ side the car* On the third day, December ihirtieth, Fred Miller said; wv,'e canft stay here^ "feerefs a cabin seventeen miles away* I *m going to try to make it." The other*"protested: "It’s suipidgA*1 Ke replied: "It’s suicide to stay here." ELIZSAKS -2 3oon after he started another blizzard set in, worse than the one before. Two days passed with no sign of rescue for the snowbound five. Mrs* Prettyman’s brother, Janes Poe, took a can of beef and followed where Fred Miller had started* After eleven hours of bucking the snow and wind he came upon a piece of cloth on the surface of the snow. After a few min­ utes digging he found that the piece of cloth was the coat of Fred Hiller, frozen to death. It took James Poe another eleven hours before he found that cabin seventeen miles away from the snowbound automobile. The inhabitants of th*i cabin were astounded by the sudden entrance of the storm-beaten man, holding a half-filled can of beef^ who ran around and their living room crying; "Here kitty, here kitty." Then they realized that iin their unexpected visitor was delirious and imagined himself back feeding h^s <H small rescue party set out in a truck. After two days search ins in tho/'snowy wastes they found the stalled automobile with BLIZZARD - 3 three women, the dog and the two cats. They had been there seven days and a half, exposed to the bitter cold within that automobile. All in — desperately ill. They were taken to the cabin 17 miles off and made comfortable. The nest day, the first clear one in more than a week, an airplane went out to search for the auto full of missing people. From aloft the pilot saw spread on the ground outside the cabin a bed sheet with words painted on it. The words were: ^One dead, three seriously ill, bring medical aid." And today was the first day since Christmas that the mar­ ooned people reached Las Vegas, warmth, food and comfort after twenty-two days of suffering. FLOODS Tonight*s weather forecast brings threats and terror to hundreds of people in the middle west. More rain, says the weather man, and already the Ohio River is flowing over its banks. Five people in Ohio and Indiana are dead, drowned In these terrifying premature floods. The river is two feet above flood stage In Cincinnati and experts are predicting that it will rise another six feet or more. All through the valley of the Ohio, the people living in the lowlands have been moved out of their homes to higher ground. The Red Cross has already established relief headquarters at Cincinnati. MURDER Oscar Wilde used to say that art doesn’t copy life, fct’s life that copies art. Here’s one that happened in the ball room of the Manhattan Opera House, New York, last night and this morning. Seven hundred guests were at an entertainment there. Among them Grover Whalen, former Commissioner of Police, supposed to be next Tammany candidate for Mayor Of New York — and President of the Worlds Fair. In the middle of the gayety, a violent quarrel sprang up. Plates, glasses and bottles flew. When the fray was suppressed, a young man lay dead on the floor, stabbed twice. The New York Police were promptly on the scene under the command of Inspector Michael McDermott, famous in the detective world as the man who broke the Snyder-Gray case. He immediately ordered all doors closed. For four hours not a guest was permitted to leave, not even McDermott’s ex-boss, former Police Commissioner Whalen. And there ensued a scene which I’ve seen described several times in fiction stories but never before heard of in the actual operations of police officers. Inspector McDermott staged a reen­ acting of the crime, an act with six hundred and sixty-seven actors. That ^enabled the Inspector to determine that six persons had left the building before he had ordered the doors closed. Thereafter, by MURDER - 2 eliminating xirst one and then another, the hunted narrowed down to two people, two now under suspicion of murder. It wasn't until half past three this morning that the guests were allowed to go home and to bed. And SO LONG UNTIL TOMORROW.
