According to the United Press, Jack Uempsey, former heavyweight champion of the world, won a verdict in a Chicago court today. The Chicago Coliseum Club, an organization which stages fights, sued Uempsey for a half million dollars. But the jury said Dempsey won't have to pay. The lawsuit concerned that old plan to match Dempsey with Harry Wills for the heavyweight championship of the world. The Coliseum claimed that Dempsey had s igned a contract to meet the negro challenger but never carried it out. In the course of events Wills wao battered al I over the ring by Jack Sharkey, and Dempsey lost his title to Gene Tunney. In one of the biology classes of Yale there is a blind student who/Alo Gne of the most brilliant men of his class. What he doesnTt know about those biojogy lessons isn!t worth knov/ing. They have those yes and no tests in that biology class. Ihe instructor asks a question and i t1 s a case of yes or no for the students. The bl ind student always knows the right yej> and the right no. He sits in a corner and writes the answers out on a portable typewriter. The other students observed this and found that they could tell by explained t he matter to him and said that hereafter in * ose yes and no examinati ons the blind student should reverse the answers. He told them in a solemn speech today that if they rejected his leadership he would commit suicide. Gandhi wants that assemblage of the Indian Nationalist party to approv of the Peace Agreement which he has concluded with the British Viceroy of India. Gandhi, the revolutionist, has now taken the position of a moderate and the extreme fire-eaters of his own party are against him. He has been hissed and hooted and physical attacks have been made on him. __—------------ - According to the Associated Press the Working Committee of the Nationalist Party, today voted in favor of Gandhi. Mr. Lyon writes that he has received his 1931 iactM Literary Digest Atlas of the world and that the f a in i ly have been taking a lot of interest in the maps. One point caught their eyes and they called my attriti on to it. It's that old tw i ster concerning th e Panama Canal. Plenty of people know that the Canal runs the wrong way, that is, it doesn't run in the direction you'd expect it to. |he Atlantic Ocean, as we all know, is on the east of the Americas. The Pacific Ocean is on the West. You'd expect the Canal which connects the two oceans to run from the Atlantic on the east to the Pacific on the west. But jit is just the opposite. Beginning at the Atlantic side the Canal actually runs east. ttJ* Its Atlantic entrance is west of its Pacific entrance. Page . /&' the way the Isthmus curved, but a of Panama is lot of us are hazy about the exact lay-out. | was, and so I looked it up on the two maps showing the Panama Canal on pages 82 and 83 of the Literary Digest &tlas, and on r I saw just how the Isthmus of Panama has a shape something like an S and is bent in such fashion that at the Canal Zone it has the Atlantic Ocean on the west and the Pacific Ocean on the east, and that certainly does stand things on their heads. Well, after that I feel like closing for the evening by saying the sun has just set in the east and tomorrow morning it will rise in the west and tonight the North Star will sh i ne in the South.
