Today was a big day in Wall Street.
Stocks took a jump al I up and down the
line. Mr. Cozens, the financial editor
of the International News Service, tells
me that the bulls had their xqy way
from open ing to ci os ing.
Sound and conservative stocks
made gains of from one to three or four
points, while the more speculative
shares climbed as much as fifteen
points.

On Satum»y evening I told ho* a number of ftaherman
were adrift on a big moving eheet of loe on Lake Erie, and how
they were being rescued by boats of the Coast Guard,
Well, the last chapter of that wild adventure has just
been written.
Things got very complicated. According to the United
Press, Coast Guard boats took 17 fishermen off the ice floe.
Then, with three fishermen still to be rescued, one of the Coast
Guard boats was caught in the ice. The ice jam pressed around
it and then froze solid. So the 7 Coast Guardsmen In the boat
were left adrift with the fishermen they were trying to rescue.
The wind was high and the ice jam, with the boat in the middle of
it, went drifting away. Other boats went after it, through the
ice, and after a hard struggle they rescued the men.
Another story of the same kind comes from Lake Michigan*
Several fishermen were fishing on the edge of the ice when it broke
loose and drifted out into the lake, 4 were rescued, but one is
still missing. He was last seen on an ice cake, which then drifted
out of sight. 2 airplanes have gone out to scout over the lake

and try to find him. According to the International News
Service, some people believe that he was able to reach the
*hite Shoal Lighthouse, because strange lights have been seen
in that distant lighthouse. The missing man may be trying to
signal from there.
It was a stormy weekend on the lakes, with gales and
blizzards, and things seem to have been especially hard on the
boys who were trying to do a little ice fishing.
BUTLER
It looks as though ws can ring down the curtain on the
Butler-MuBaolini affair*
General Smedley Butler has written a letter to Secretary
of the Navy
in which he says fca that he is sorry about those
remarks he made on the subject of the Fascist Dictator of Italy.
He explained that he had been told, when he made his speech, that
everything was strictly private and there would be no publicity.
According to the Associated Press, Secretory of the Navy Adams
has responded by letting the General off with a sharp reprimand.
And so General Butler will not be court martialed.
He has been restored to his former position as Commandant
of the Marine Base at Qnantico.
A lot of people down in Washington are wondering at the
abrupt terrain aticn of the sensational case. No explanation is
offered by the Navy Department, but it is pointed out that there
were a lot expressions of sympathy for General Butler from all
over the country. And the International News Service tells us
that the Italian Embassy has been conferring with the Naval
authorities. Italian diplomatic officials made it clear that the
Italian Government bore no ill will towards General Butler and
was not anxious to see him court martialed.
Meanwhile, the Associated Press reports that Cornelius
Vanderbilt, Jr., from whom Butler got the story about Mussolini,
had something more to say. He hints that there are deep, dark,,
secret things that have not come to light. Someone else did a
bit of talking too, he intimates, somebody bigger and higher up
than General Butler.
Well, that comes as a hint of further possible trouble;
but so far as Gsneral Butler is concerned his part in the incident
stems to be a closed book
Now to go on to a bright picture, a horae
show.
A gayly dressed crowd ie watching, as smart horsemen
astride blooded animals, ride prancing around the ring.
Then the picture changes. Early this morning when the
horse show was deserted, save for a few grooms and attendants,
a fire broke out. In a brief instant it was a wild, raging
blaze, 3 men were killed; and so were 30 horses valued at some

This happened out in Oakland, California, According
to the Associated Press, the officials of the Oakland Horse Show
state that there was another fire a couple of days ago, but it was
put out before it had a chance to spread. They add that this
former blaze was set by fire bugs. Yes, and firemen who fought the
disastrous fire that raged today state that they detected the
suspicious smell of gasoline. And that too is a hint of fire bugs.

The United States Government has received thirty-five
cents, A money order for that sum was received by the State
Department today. It was sent by a school boy in far away Japan
whose name is Shigeyoshi Sukushima. He said he was sending the
thrity-five cents to buy a bronze wreath for the grave of
Lieutenant Caldwell, the army aviator.
Several months ago army aviators flew with an important
document across this continent. It was the London Naval Treaty
with the signature of the Japanese Government, and it was being
taken by air to Washington to be signed by American officials.
There was a crash,
and
Lieutenant Caldwell was killed.
And now Shigeyoshi Sukushima, who is JEkx in the sixth
grade over in Japan, sends his thirty-five cents as a token from
a child in far away Nippon.
Of course, thirty-five cents isn't enough to buy a bronze
wreath, or any kind of wreath for that matter. But the
International News Service informs us that State Department
officials will add

Excuse me a moment, while I laugh. I get a real
kick out o . .ms triumph ot the coon family. I mean a family of
raccoons out in California.
The tfew York Sun tells us that on a ranch near the town
of fulaire two coons anrf a number of baby coons were discovered
living in an underground drainpipe. It was Emory Whilton who
found them and he called his dogs.
The dogs couldnH get at
the coons in the pipe.
Then Emory called upon Police Sergeant Edwards, who had
a tear gas pistol, so Sergeant Edwards fired some tear gas into
that pipe. Then he and Emory and the dogs waited for the coons
to come out. They didn’t see any signs of Mr. and Mrs. Coon and
family, but they did begin to feel the tear gas, which drifted
upward. Their eyes began to vater an^ the tears poured down their
cheeks, and while the two men and the dogs were trying

During the years since the death of the sheik of the
films, the Rudolph Valentino Association has kept going and is

This week's Literary Digest tells something about it
and the things it does. Each year Valentino worshippers in
London give Christmas presents in his name to an Italian hospital
in which Valentino was interested. They've given the hospital
a roof garden, and also opened Valentino wards.
The women of the association write long, gushing letters
about him. They sell postcards bearing his likeness. They sell
his photograph, his
biography,
and his book of poems entitled
"Day Dreams".
They also have already raised a large sum of money
to erect a monument in his honor

They arrange for revivals of his films; and no matter
where they are shown, these women travel incredible distances to
see their hero, and bring wreaths to leave in the vestibule.
A few have personal souvenirs of him which they keep

a note of protest.
They are having a Ping Pong
tournament over in Budapest, Hungary, - a
tournament for the Ping Pong championship
of the world. No, I am not protesting
against Ping Pong or a Ping Pong
tournament, or a Ping Pong championship
of the world. Ping Pong is real ly a
surprising game. It's fast and requires
skill.
The New York Sun informs us
that the mightiest of Ping Pongers from
all over the world have gathered at that
Budapest tournament. England has sent a
team of British Ping Pong stars and they
are going to swing a powerful paddle for
the glory of dear old England. Germany
is represented, so is Rumania, tsthonia,
Lithuania, Czechoslavakia, Austria,
Hungary, Sweden, France and Latvia. All
these noble Ping Pongers will ping the
pong for the glory of their respective
countr ies•
But Uncle Sam is not represented.

is ping ponging at the great Ping Pong
tournament at Budapest. Why not, I ask?
