It was told me by L.B. Nichols, Assistant Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Chief Lieutenant of F. 8. I. Director J. ~dgar Hoover. He related how they got hold of a notebook belonging to a suspected spy. The notebook was full of writing, but this was some kind of code, cipher. The F. B. I. has crypt"ographera who decipher secret writing - but they couldn't figure out what kind of cipher the peculiar symbols in the notebook might be. The opinion was that the mysterious writing might be some kind of shorthand, which the spy had invented f or himself. That sent the notebook along to the F. B. I. shorthand expert - who really is an expert. Assistant Dir ctor ichols told me that this master of steno raphic lore knows more about shorthand than anybody iax else in the world. You should make his ' acquaintance, you irl stenographers. Be took one looK at the baf f ling hieroglyphics in the spy's notebook and said - Ob yes, That, he explained, was an old and obsolete system of German ~horthand - put out in Eighteen- Forty-Tbree and almost forgotten years ago even by Germans. It was one of the first primitive experiments in modern shorthand - and now it had turned up as secret espionag~ writing in this present wartime United States.
