GOOD EVENING EVERYBODY: Today, at the Tennessee State Prison near Nashville, six convicts in swift concerted action strode through the prison yard into the office of the deputy warden. They were led by Lonnie Taylor, sentenced to ninety-nine years for murder. i*ast year Lonnie Taylor led a prison riot, and on two previous occasions he escaped. Two of the others were ninety-nine year convicts sentenced for murder. The other three were long term robbers. As they stepped into the deputy warden*s office, they drew pistols. They had four guns among them -- obtained in what fashion nobody Imows. They forced the deputy warden to accompany them, tied up several guards and compelled a prison trusty to drive them in a prison truck. In the truck they escaped, -- taking the Deputy Warden and another prison official with them. Out of the gate rushed the truck. On tiie walls ware guards with madhine guns. They opened fire. The truck raced right along. An alarm brought city police cars in swift pursuit. There was PRISON BREAK - 2 a running gun battle between the cops and the truck — right in the streets of Nashville. The battle ended when the truck smashed into a curb. Everybody in it shot. The Deputy Warden, dangerously wounded,hit in the hail of bullets. One of the escaping convicts killed.
