Squadron• of B-29s flying from Forth Worth, Texas, and Tucson, Arizona with their rendezvous off Cape May, Rew Jersey, followed by sweeps over Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Bew Tort. The, pl n bad been for the superfortresses to fly in one giant formation. But the weather made that inadvisable. The B-29s ran through thunder storas over the Great Smokies of North Carolina, and the weather ~Q!~lR§ ___ =_i was such that, from Cape May, they split into s a ua rons of twelve -- roaring, by the dozens, -- over the great cities of the East. Millions of people today beheld their cities being wiped out, witl an incalcula~e loss of fx life -- theoretically! But they could hardly haTe suspected it. The weather was such that few got a good glimpse of the boabers -- too cloudy. So Operation !acific, while devastatingly s ccessful from a military point of view, was a lot lea, iapressive for the w~tcbers on the ground.
