One response comes today from the Treasury Department in Washington. As might be expected, it’s a direct negative. Secretary Morgenthau announces that President 3 Roosevelt's administration is not thinking of any change in the government money program. Mr. Morgenthau added that the Treasury Department is satisfied with the ways things are going. Mean­ while there is a bitter bed ate over the Hoover statement -- a clash in the Senate. That Mr. Hoover's statement is a political pronouncement of first magnitude is conceded on all sides. The point where opinions differ is whether its main angle is -- party or person? It is to be observed that the Ex—President who is the titular head of the Republican Party, is returning home to California, after attending the big RepuDlican Lincoln Day Dinner at the Waldorf in Hew York. And he has been confabulating extensively HOOVER - 1A with heads of the party. That would make it seem as if his call for the gold standard were something worked out in the discussions with the Republican National leaders. That line of reasoning would tend to represent Mr. Hoover as the party champion, raising the party banner, uttering the party war cry HOOVER - & But another trend of opinion represents the gold standard a Inore Pe^onal light. Since the advent of the Mew Deal, ^.President Hoover has been distinguished by his silence. He has been in the background. Many people counted him out of the political picture. He has made no outright attack on the policy of his successor — until now. And so some political wiseacres interpret lif:] I I his gold stand as a definite, carefully-timed reentrance into the picture of politics, a bid for dominant influence in the party ; ] council and possibly for the next Republican presidential nomination. Anyway, whether it is Mr. Hoover speaking to the country in behalf of the Republican Party, or whether speaking to a , /• the party in behalf of himself — it's altogether likely that the gold standard declaration will be a Republican line of attack on the New Deal in the next campaign. He did not call for a j return to the old dollar. He asked for a return to gold, a • liberation of the yellow metal, on the basis of the present fifty-nine cent dollar. In a way, Mr. Hoover takes up where the Supreme Court left off. He a accepts the fifty-nine cent dollar, but say si-let fs go back to the system of paying in gold. One would guess his attitude to be, standard that the Administration was wrong in going off the gold to start with, but now that the dollar is devalued, we canft go back. A And thatfs pretty much the common sense gist of the Supreme Court decision. Lovers of the odd and unusual are pointing out that nine Supreme Court Justices,ofeeawhoi* two were appointed by A Herbert Hoover when he was President, Roberts and Coraozo. And both of these Hoover appointees voted to support the Roosevelt government in the gold decision. However, it should be remarked that the support which that gx decision gave to the ;jold policy was coupled with the criticism that the gold policy at the same time was illegal. This theme of gold certainly has stirred up a lot of action- especially in the case of one publishing house in New York. The proposal is to give the Deparment of Commerce in „ almost absolute^ power over ships^-nsft every phase where the . security of human life is concerned. The present name of the Steamboat Inspection Service will be changed to the Bureau of Marine Inspection. The change in name from •'Steamboat*1 to '•Marine concerns technical possibilities of certain classes of ships evading inspection* because they are not driven by steam maybe by gwtarrtx motors, or sails. The Marine Bureau will certify to the staunchness of ships' hulls, issue certificates, confirm and suspend license^, ai conduct rigid investigations as to^ the fitness of men and equipment. gHIPS - 2 Seamen, instead of being hired and fired in a haphazard way, would get shipping papers with their photos attached. And the Bureau would regulate the watch system on vessels and compel a three-shift wx watch. According to that, no man would be on duty ©ore than eight hours a day, standing watch. She sued and got a verdict of ten thousand dollars* There was an appeal, based on the argument that the damages granted to the Italian scrub woman were too large — that a woman of her social position wasn’t entitled to so much money. And that’s what made the Judge of the Appeal Court angry. DETECTIVES Here1 s another one of those neat bits of detective work. A house was robbed in Brooklyn and two hundred dollars* worth of jewelry ^aiE^stolen. The detectives started quizzing around immediately afterward and two boys told oi seeing a woman coming out of the house In question. She was in such a hurry and so fat? she fell down the stairs. They helped her up, and she went away limping, because she had lost the heel of one of her shoes. The detectives hunted for the missing heel and found it. Then they combed the xhEUKEOt shoe-repairing shops for a long distance around. They found a shoemaker who had just put a new heel on the shoe of a ¥/oman who lived nearby, a Mrs. Trapini, The detectives went to Mrs. Trapini fs house and' searched, and found the stolen ,j ewelry. When the woman was taken to the police station, it was found she had a criminal record of ten previous arrests and four convictions. Her husband has been out of work a long time and sn has had to feed her children. His political enemies sxexssx started spreading a whispering campaign, indicating that candidate Fiedler has all .that spinach as a disguise^ that years ago he fled from Europe for some scandalous reason or another, . p : and grew whiskers to keep from being recognized. ftgy this, candidate Fiedler made a devastating response. He addressed his political opponent, saying: ,fIf you donate twenty- five dollars to charity. I’ll get a shave.” That political opponent seens to be an economical soul, because he cut everything in hal , toe twenty-five dollars and the shave. So in a statosmanlilie manner he said he Yrould give twelve and a half dollars to charity, if Fiedler would put a barber to work on one-half of the facial foliage. And Fiedler took him up on it. So now he!s running for office on a two-faced like whiskers, and the other side appeals to the ones who don’t. That seems to make it a hundred per cent, and he should be elected.
