Scenes reminiscent of the World War were witnessed in
Washington today when^ thousand members of the American Legion
of the Veterans of Foreign Wars paraded through the streets and
assembled at the steps of the Capitol.
They presented a petition signed by more than 2,400,00(J
names demanding the payment of the bonus.
The veterans , many of them, wearing faded uniforms of
olive drab, marched with flags and the blaring music of bands.
The Brooklyn Times relates that they were received by
a group of Senators and Congressmen.
Meanwhile the New York World Telegram today prints
large headlines declaring that the disabled veterans who were
actually wounded in the war are getting less from the Government
than those who never saw the embattled field's ox France.

tions for the maintenance of the Farm
Board to such an extent that the Board
would pass right out of existence.

Over In England Mlliam U. McCann, a miner, was
separated from his wife. The couple couldnit get along. After
a period of singleness and solitude McCann became lonely, so he
thought he1d get himself another wife. In fact he advertised
for one:,- "*oung man regular work wishes to meet widow.” He
received a letter in reply to that ad, and after he exchanged
several letters with the lady, he made an appointment to meet
her.
He nearly fainted when he saw her. It was his wife,
the same one from whom he had separated, and in her hand she
had a document for him. It was a summons to appear in court on
a charge of non-support.
A United Press dispatch which appeared in the
Hartford Times relates that when the grave and solemn British
judge heard the story of the sentimental miner and the sentimental
advertisement, he burst out laugliing.

Here's a tall one that seems to be
circulating a good deal through the
country. It has come to me from various
sources. Some tail-story tellers relate
it as an experience of their own --
such as Jim Martin of West Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. Others inclose newspaper
clippings.
L. Z. Lawrence of Haddonfield, New
Jersey, sends me a clipping which
attributes the whopper to George
McCarthy of Piney Hollow, New Jersey.
Here's the way the amazing yarn
reads:
A man went out in the woods and
took his umbrella with him -- it looked
as if it might rain. He put the umbrella
down on a rock and began to gather
medicinal herbs. Why the medicinal
herbs, I don't know. But that^s the way
all the versions of the story go. It
started to rain, and the man dashed to
the rock and grabbed his umbrella. He
opened it in a hurry, and as he did so
a snake fell to the ground a snake
