The 11 human torch" was Frank Kierdorf, an official of the Teamsters - who appeared at a hospital in Pontiac. He was badly burned, and told a weird story - of having been eeized by two men. Who doused him with gasoline.- and set him on fire. Kierdorf died, several days later. The story was doubted, and the real truth appears to be that the "human torch" was the victim · in an arson plot that went awry. As is well own, a.Henry began hie career as a bank teller, William Sidney Porter. ho was convicted of embezzling a eight hundred and fifty-four dollars - from tila bank at Auetin, Texae. And served - a prison sentence. At'ter his release, he win went on to lltuiq renown as a story writer, under the pseydonym of 0 1 Henry. Recently, the Texas Heritage Foundation asked President Eisenhower to grant a pardon - and remove, officially, the stigma from the writer's name. But the President replies - that, while he'd like to do it, he has no power to iseue posthumous pardons. That's no sur p rise. In fact, either way - it would not have been a surprise ending.
