CUBA Apparently we're about to hear any day now that Uncle Sam has recognized the latest government of Cuba, the regime of Provisional President Carlos Mendietta, Diplomats representing sixteen of the Latin-American republics called at the White House today. They had been invited by President Roosevelt to discuss this question of the recognition of Cuba. Word came from the White House that Hr, Roosevelt summoned this conference in order to inform the gentlemen that he thought the present government had proved its mettle and that the time had come for other countries to take Cuba into the fold once more. At the same time, it was learned from the State Department that Secretary Hull was convinced that Cuba's affairs are on the mend and that all difficulties are being ironed out. He had a conference at the White House this morning with Ambassador Luther. It is understood that the German debt situation was on the carpet. When the Ambassador left the White House, all he said was that he and the President were talking about economic problems in a distinctly general way. Nevertheless, I understand that the President was emphatic in declaring that Germany^ American Creditors must be treated on the same footing as the creditors of other nations. It has been reported that two European countries got preferential treatment from the Fatherland. INCOMES Uncle Sam*s Department of Commerce issued some figures today that are enough* to make us open our -yes. The Department, for a whole year, has been studying our incomes, the incomes of everybody in the little old U.S.A. In 1929 the sum total of the country’s income was eighty-one billions. In 1930, the figures went to seventy-five billion. In 1932, the year before last, it had shrunk to forty-nine billions. NBC Another angle on that air mail controversy in Washington is given in the Washington Post today. The point in dispute, of course, concerns whether or not the air mail contracts were av/arded to the lowest bidder. Thomas B. Doe, President of Eastern Air Transport, makes the contention that airmail contracts should not be awarded to the lov/est bidder. That he claims would only mean that the companies making these low bids would have to use old, obsolete, and inferior equipment. He adds that it is in the interest of the country to have the most up-to-date airplanes and air transport facilities. Lodwick An amusing bit oi news was brought back from Panama today by General J.
