There was also testimony that shed a new light upon the charges against Lieutenant-Colonel Giffin, the charges that he had been guilty of conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman. One of the first on the witness stand today was Lieutenant James C. Smith, the man who preferred those charges. He was not called by the prosecution nor by the defense, but summoned at the order, of the court itself.
