<text top="374" left="388" width="488" height="14" font="1">Based  on  oral tradition and  anecdotes from a variety of sources, we </text>
<text top="395" left="388" width="472" height="14" font="1">know that theatre activities were in  evidence throughout the first </text>
<text top="415" left="387" width="486" height="14" font="1">decade and  a half of the history of Marian College. One-act and full-</text>
<text top="437" left="388" width="424" height="14" font="1">length  plays  by established  playwrights and  productions of </text>
<text top="458" left="387" width="443" height="14" font="1">Shakespeare's  plays were among the accomplishments of the </text>
<text top="479" left="387" width="492" height="14" font="1">student body, then a small  assemblage of male religious  preparing tc </text>
<text top="500" left="388" width="468" height="14" font="1">become educators. (Among the present faculty of the college are </text>
<text top="521" left="387" width="464" height="14" font="1">several  cast members from a 1950s production of HENRY V.)  The </text>
<text top="542" left="388" width="470" height="14" font="1">playbills from these years show that their programs also included </text>
<text top="563" left="387" width="442" height="14" font="1">student written short and full-length  plays  such  as  &#34;The Lame </text>
<text top="584" left="388" width="435" height="14" font="1">Donkey,&#34; a short play based  on  a Christmas fable and  LUX  ET </text>
<text top="605" left="387" width="494" height="14" font="1">TENEBRAE,  a full  length  play portraying the final  hours in the life and </text>
<text top="626" left="387" width="118" height="14" font="1">death of Christ.. </text>
<text top="665" left="387" width="492" height="14" font="1">According to a 1958 edition of the student newspaper,  in  response tc </text>
<text top="686" left="387" width="460" height="14" font="1">urgings of the college's newly installed president,  Linus  R.  Foy,  a </text>
<text top="707" left="387" width="487" height="14" font="1">theatre organization for students was formed, creating what is  now </text>
<text top="728" left="388" width="491" height="14" font="1">&#34;the college's oldest student club.&#34;  By  1959 the group was  known as </text>
<text top="748" left="387" width="494" height="14" font="1">the Theatre Guild. (The designation as  &#34;the oldest club&#34; first appears </text>
<text top="770" left="387" width="493" height="14" font="1">in  print in THE  RECORD  in  1961. In  1960 the college's name had  beer </text>
<text top="791" left="387" width="432" height="14" font="1">changed to Marist College.)  During the start-up years of this </text>
<text top="812" left="387" width="477" height="14" font="1">organization it existed side-by-side with a separate set of in-house </text>
<text top="833" left="387" width="461" height="14" font="1">theatre productions staged  by the young religious attending the </text>
<text top="854" left="387" width="485" height="14" font="1">college and, within their structure, student directors were common </text>
<text top="875" left="387" width="135" height="14" font="1">from earliest days. </text>
<text top="914" left="387" width="418" height="14" font="1">The  initial attempt to permit &#34;lay&#34; students to direct Guild </text>
<text top="935" left="388" width="476" height="14" font="1">productions came in  December,  1961, when  Richard  Kearney,  a 21 </text>
<text top="955" left="387" width="493" height="14" font="1">year old  undergraduate, directed a one-act play by Eugene O'Neill as </text>
<text top="977" left="387" width="489" height="14" font="1">the first student assignment under &#34;The Student Director Program.&#34; </text>
<text top="998" left="387" width="478" height="14" font="1">The  program was  begun  by James  Britt, Guild  Director, &#34;to foster a </text>
<text top="1019" left="387" width="453" height="14" font="1">finer understanding of the Dramatic Arts,&#34; as  well as  deploying </text>
<text top="1040" left="388" width="462" height="14" font="1">leadership qualities in  students. The drive to create alternatives </text>
<text top="1061" left="387" width="454" height="14" font="1">approaches to theatre through  new student clubs was  partially </text>
<text top="1082" left="387" width="494" height="14" font="1">caused  by the desire to have  more opportunities to direct.: Children' </text>
<text top="1103" left="387" width="454" height="14" font="1">Theatre (c1968) and  Experimental Theatre (c.1970) A later trial </text>
<text top="1124" left="388" width="487" height="14" font="1">program sponsored  by the Guild for student directors came in  1974 </text>

<text top="70" left="387" width="494" height="14" font="1">student written  plays (1981) eventually became a major opportunity </text>
<text top="91" left="387" width="318" height="14" font="1">for students to gain  experience as  directors. </text>
<text top="130" left="387" width="484" height="14" font="1">The Theatre Guild  persisted as the Guild  until 1976 when it merged </text>
<text top="151" left="387" width="494" height="14" font="1">with Children's Theatre (c.  1968) and  Experimental Theatre (c.  1970) </text>
<text top="172" left="387" width="458" height="14" font="1">to become the Marist College Council on Theatre Arts (MCCTA). </text>
<text top="193" left="387" width="460" height="14" font="1">Children's Theatre had  been founded as  a separate organization </text>
<text top="214" left="387" width="484" height="14" font="1">since the Guild did  not want to take on  extra  productions. Also,  the </text>
<text top="235" left="387" width="475" height="14" font="1">student founders of Children's Theatre wanted to direct the plays, </text>
<text top="256" left="387" width="484" height="14" font="1">themselves. And  it was at about the same time that other students </text>
<text top="277" left="387" width="455" height="14" font="1">expressed  a desire &#34;to experiment with new works.&#34; There was </text>
<text top="298" left="387" width="486" height="14" font="1">something of a rebellion abroad against the Guild's commitment to </text>
<text top="319" left="387" width="484" height="14" font="1">draw its  bills exclusively from those plays which  had  enjoyed, if not </text>
<text top="341" left="387" width="488" height="14" font="1">commercial, at least critical success on  Broadway. Two factors came </text>
<text top="361" left="387" width="466" height="14" font="1">into play. There was a new openness to staging original works by </text>
<text top="383" left="388" width="472" height="14" font="1">both students and faculty and there was  a renewal of the push to </text>
<text top="404" left="387" width="462" height="14" font="1">create  more chances for students to learn about directing in the </text>
<text top="424" left="387" width="61" height="14" font="1">theatre. </text>
<text top="463" left="387" width="481" height="14" font="1">The college's first children's production was given on  March 21-23, </text>
<text top="484" left="388" width="485" height="14" font="1">1969. In  the beginning, a few performances were given on  campus; </text>
<text top="505" left="387" width="470" height="14" font="1">often  more performances were performed &#34;on the road&#34; than on </text>
<text top="526" left="387" width="467" height="14" font="1">campus.  Elementary schools,  hospitals, and, even  every now and </text>
<text top="548" left="387" width="455" height="14" font="1">then, prisons were the locations at which the road-shows were </text>
<text top="568" left="387" width="450" height="14" font="1">given. Funding for these trips came from community agencies. </text>
<text top="590" left="388" width="492" height="14" font="1">Eventually these external dollars became  more difficult to obtain anc </text>
<text top="611" left="387" width="480" height="14" font="1">student academic schedules became more disparate making travel </text>
<text top="631" left="387" width="480" height="14" font="1">arrangements Impossible, even when  money was secured. Touring </text>
<text top="652" left="387" width="481" height="14" font="1">ended and the number of on-campus performances increased to a </text>
<text top="674" left="387" width="443" height="14" font="1">week, seven  performance schedule.  Performances  have since </text>
<text top="694" left="387" width="489" height="14" font="1">doubled within the one-week format thereby requiring two casts of </text>
<text top="716" left="387" width="469" height="14" font="1">characters to avoid  having students miss too many classes. Today </text>
<text top="737" left="387" width="446" height="14" font="1">Children's Theatre is  performed annually for several thousand </text>
<text top="758" left="387" width="251" height="14" font="1">children who come to the campus. </text>
<text top="797" left="387" width="494" height="14" font="1">Consistent efforts to encourage student writing for theatre are  notec </text>
<text top="817" left="387" width="475" height="14" font="1">in  1970 under what then were called  &#34;experimental productions.&#34; </text>
<text top="839" left="387" width="450" height="14" font="1">Although these early efforts originated as  class  projects in  one </text>
<text top="860" left="388" width="443" height="14" font="1">professor's theatre course, the Theatre Guild encouraged and </text>
<text top="881" left="387" width="436" height="14" font="1">financially supported the class  efforts. At first the plays were </text>
<text top="901" left="388" width="492" height="14" font="1">presented  both on  and  off-campus. The  most often used  off-campus </text>
<text top="923" left="387" width="490" height="14" font="1">site was the historic Vassar Institute which, at that time,  housed the </text>
<text top="944" left="388" width="468" height="14" font="1">Marist College administered  Poughkeepsie College Center.  At the </text>
<text top="965" left="387" width="432" height="14" font="1">same time some independent productions of original works </text>
<text top="986" left="387" width="76" height="14" font="1">appeared. </text>
<text top="1025" left="388" width="479" height="14" font="1">Eventually the format for original works  began to change, the class </text>
<text top="1046" left="388" width="492" height="14" font="1">projects resulted  in  programs of multiple works, such  as  DOUBLE  BIL </text>
<text top="1067" left="387" width="457" height="14" font="1">(1978) and TWO  FOR THE  SHOW  (1979). Since  1980 the natural </text>
<text top="1088" left="387" width="482" height="14" font="1">extension of this practice has  been  an  annual festival of short plays </text>
<text top="1109" left="387" width="290" height="14" font="1">written, directed and acted  by students. </text>

<text top="49" left="387" width="476" height="14" font="1">Today, theatre productions at Marist College are still  being funded </text>
<text top="70" left="387" width="494" height="14" font="1">through student government's allocation of money derived from the </text>
<text top="91" left="387" width="469" height="14" font="1">student activity fee. The students' drama club,  MCCTA,  submits a </text>
<text top="112" left="388" width="480" height="14" font="1">budget request to student government on  a semester by semester </text>
<text top="134" left="388" width="42" height="14" font="1">basis. </text>
<text top="172" left="387" width="487" height="14" font="1">The sole structural change within  MCCTA since the 1976 unification </text>
<text top="193" left="387" width="428" height="14" font="1">came with the addition of HuMarists. In  the early 90s some </text>
<text top="214" left="387" width="494" height="14" font="1">undergraduates branched out into the arena of stand-up comedy. At </text>
<text top="235" left="387" width="494" height="14" font="1">first their performances were high  points in  students' talent contests </text>
<text top="256" left="387" width="462" height="14" font="1">Then,  slowly at first,  but with persistence, a group of comedians </text>
<text top="277" left="387" width="488" height="14" font="1">came together and  searched for recognition as  an  organization. The </text>
<text top="298" left="387" width="492" height="14" font="1">earliest effort was to incorporate with MCCTA which was  prepared tc </text>
<text top="319" left="387" width="412" height="14" font="1">sponsor the humorists as  an  adjunct activity.  But student </text>
<text top="341" left="387" width="446" height="14" font="1">government eventually decided that this group should find its </text>
<text top="361" left="388" width="440" height="14" font="1">permanent home within the MCCTA organization, as  another </text>
<text top="383" left="388" width="460" height="14" font="1">performance unit. Final  constitutional unification came about in </text>
<text top="404" left="388" width="44" height="14" font="1">1998. </text>
<text top="442" left="387" width="494" height="14" font="1">The traditional approach of relying on the faculty adviser(s) to suppl, </text>
<text top="463" left="388" width="462" height="14" font="1">professional guidance was  effective through the 1960s and for a </text>
<text top="484" left="387" width="488" height="14" font="1">short time in the 1970s. It was  during the '70s that the involvement </text>
<text top="505" left="387" width="492" height="14" font="1">of full-time faculty began to disappear,  here due to some of the mos </text>
<text top="526" left="387" width="486" height="14" font="1">supportive faculty turning to college administration, while on  other </text>
<text top="548" left="387" width="427" height="14" font="1">campuses it may have been  due to faculty withdrawal from </text>
<text top="568" left="387" width="488" height="14" font="1">involvement with extra-curricula activities. Today's faculty advisor is </text>
<text top="589" left="387" width="494" height="14" font="1">a voting member of MCCTA's  Executive Board. Yet  it is  quite differen1 </text>
<text top="611" left="387" width="491" height="14" font="1">from when two or more faculty met with a small group, three or fou </text>
<text top="631" left="387" width="493" height="14" font="1">student officers of the Guild, to make all the administrative decision5 </text>
<text top="653" left="387" width="110" height="14" font="1">for the season. </text>
<text top="692" left="387" width="477" height="14" font="1">While dependence upon semester by semester budget allocations </text>
<text top="712" left="387" width="467" height="14" font="1">from student government worked when fewer productions were </text>
<text top="733" left="387" width="449" height="14" font="1">staged,  planning an  entire theatre season  became vastly more </text>
<text top="754" left="387" width="493" height="14" font="1">complicated starting with the late '70s because from one semester ti </text>
<text top="775" left="387" width="493" height="14" font="1">the next, there's no guarantee of the level  of allocated funding.  Even </text>
<text top="797" left="387" width="475" height="14" font="1">a semester plan  is troublesome today since it is  impossible to hire </text>
<text top="818" left="388" width="483" height="14" font="1">professional directors, choreographers,  musicians when there is  no </text>
<text top="839" left="387" width="474" height="14" font="1">time to do a search  after budgets are announced or, worse yet, to </text>
<text top="860" left="388" width="426" height="14" font="1">make adjustments when the money for professional staff is </text>
<text top="881" left="387" width="85" height="14" font="1">disallowed. </text>
<text top="919" left="388" width="456" height="14" font="1">Finally, there is  a comment in  one of the more popular national </text>
<text top="940" left="387" width="483" height="14" font="1">college guides that helps to describe the role  played  by the theatre </text>
<text top="962" left="387" width="462" height="14" font="1">organization on campus today.  &#34;In the cultural arena, the Marist </text>
<text top="982" left="387" width="491" height="14" font="1">College Council on Theatre Arts is  a favorite,  producing several  plays </text>
<text top="1004" left="387" width="482" height="14" font="1">each year,  some of them written by students and  now appearing in </text>
<text top="1025" left="387" width="467" height="14" font="1">the new 350-seat Nelly Galetti Theatre located in  the $27 million </text>
<text top="1045" left="387" width="118" height="14" font="1">student center.&#34; </text>
