Congress is eager to adjourn on June Eleventh, itaich could not possibly be done if the fight to push the president* s Reorganization Bill were started right now. Today there was an important conference at the White House on the subject — the President talking about the bill iifcfc with Congressional leaders. Afterward they announced that the Reorganization Bill will not be brought up again at this session. This^^^wiHW* in a ioint signed statement by senator Bums and Congressman Warren. They say the president left the matter up to his Congressional Lieutenants to decide; and they decided. SUPREME COURT 1 : 1 Today the Supreme Court concluded its Nineteen Thirty-Severf^IVlrty-eight term by handing down a number of decisions. You'd expect the weighty verdicts of the high tribunal to be important, learned, and bristling with complicated points of law. So they were today - with one touch of melodrama. To be sure, therefs no exciting story about the court*s refusal today to reopen the Kansas City Livestock case. Tha^s a profound affair concerning rate orders to commission men, proposed by the Department of Agriculture. The New Deal wanted the nine justices to reconsider a previous decision they^ made, but they refused. * And I don t suppose most of us will find much drama in K*% the court1 s refusal to review cases of the National Labor Relations Board against the Remington Rand Company and Republic Steel. The turn of Supreme Court melodrama_ comes with a decision in a bandit case out in §ansas.«*^ a little more than a year ago, we had on this broadcast the story of a wild shooting fray in the post office at Topeka, Kansas - G-men versus bandits. Two bandits were wanted for a bank robbery at Katonah, New York. The federal agents traced them out to Kansas, and lay in wait for them to come and get their mail at the Topeka post office. One of them appeared, asking for letters at the window. The other was lurking nearby, covering his pal. I ft i: So, when the two G-men stepped up to arrest the one, the other opened fire. There was a pistol battle all over the place, and one of the federal men fell wounded. When we had that story a year ago, all we hnew was that the wounded O-man's condition was said to be critical. Did he die? . Or did he recover? I don't recall ever seeing the answer. The question vanished in the hurhy-burly of the news day by day. But now we have the answer in todayfs Supreme Court decision. SUPREME COURT « 3 The nine Justices refused to review the case of the two bandits in the Topeka " sho°ting. ’ihey^Sif sentenced to hang for the murder of that G-man. KIDNAP Throngs of angry men are gathered at Princeton, Florida, this evening, muttering with helpless rage. Local farmers drawn together instinctively by the impulse to do something in the kidnapping of five year old James Cash. But what can they do? Where can they look to fi*id the boy and the kidnappers? Perhaps they’ll scour the countryside in a haphazard hunt, searching everywhere. Twelve o'clock came today at the country town^# j | Princeton - noon, the zero hour when the return of the little boy had been promised. Nothing happened, no sign of the tiny lad. The anxiety of the family grew by the minute, then by the hour - and also the anger of those assembled farmers. The father is the | owner of the local general store and a string of filling stations - 1 j v. man t V ip ransom note was found well-to-do but by no means a rich man. . So at onee it iooked as if the kidnappers were from the neighborhood - well informed in the affairs of the Cash family. The note directed ±3-7- to another note, placed elsewhere. This second kidnap communication, when they found It, told how contact with the Iddnappers could be established for the payment of the ten thousand dollars. The directions included a map showing a place out in the countryside. The map was further indication that the kidnappers were local - intimately familiar with the neighborhood. The time for the contact was last midnight. The father tried to keep the rendezvous but failed, gomething slipped somewhere. He returned to his home. A little later, in the dark hours past midnight, the Cash home was crowded with members of the stricken family, when there was a crash - broken glass, a ****** stone hurled through a window pane. It seemed like a sig , weird, startling, in the tenseness of the kidnap wake. And it was they looked outside, and found a third ransom note. 4-voo rather where to go to pay the again with a map - directing the money. That ransom note delivery was a fantastic boldness. KIDNAP - 3 **”*/ the kidnaPPer slipping away into surroundir.g bushes and woods - once more indicating that he was somebody intimately familiar with the neighborhood. At four thirty this morning, the father fulfilled the bidden directions, and drove out into the country. He found a winding, zigzag route and there came to a bacicwoods shack. That was the place. A flash of light in the darkness, a signal with a flashlight! The kidnapper! JM o M ot met himj*** handed over the package of money and talked with him. Thereupon James B. Cash returned home, cheerful and confident, certain of the return of the little boy nicknamed "Skeegie.” nI will receive a telephone call,” he said, ”which will tell me where to pick up Skeegie. I expect to have the boy back by twelve o(clock. It's just a matter of waiting." Those last words were only too true. Waiting, just waiting. Moon came, but no telephone call. They're still wai the anxious family, the G-men, keeping out of the case hoping the return of the boy. LEVINE in a detective story, the most interesting thing is - the clues. But in today's page one detective problem the clues are so pitiful, they're painful to tell. The strand of copper wire used to tie up the body of the kidnapped Levine boy when it was tossed into Long Island Sound. And the SI]1aii airplane found in the child*s pockets. Murray Levine, the father, declares he has no recollection of any such toy. The airplane bears the mark of a gasoline company and it is supposed that the kidnappers might have been given it when they stopped for gas - taking the child away. Perhaps they gave it to him to play with, to quiet him - before the murder. The police reveal they have checked fingerprints found on the ransom note, but these prints are not on file at the I I J \ Department of Justice in Washington. Which strengthens the belief | that the crime was not committed by professionals - but by amateurs with no police record. abduction There1 s only one good thing about this grim and sinister subject of kidnapping - there’s one kidnap story this evening with a happy ending. Yesterday at Santa Cruz, California, a four year old girl Today she was found - unharmed. smiling and prattling. The police located Tittle Betty Harboard in the shack of a fifty-seven year old woman, who had b6en taking affectionate care of the girl. She said she can’t explain why she committed the abduction - Just an overpowering desire to take the child PLYMOUTH HOCK It'S Massachusetts Justice for the Man who painted Plymouth Hock red.
