The Secretary was just saying that no communication had been received by the British government from the new DeVaiera government of the Irish Free State. Just then a representative of QeValera in London brought a message to the House of Commons which was presented ■^7 to the Secretary Dominions. It intends to abolish the oath of allegiance to the King, which is required by members of the Irish parliament by the treaty made ten years ago fapasktaa between Ireland and England. And secondly, DeValera announces that his government refuses to pay the land annuities which were promised to Great Britain by that treaty. The total amount of these land annuities 89 miI I ion,500,000 pounds sterling, of which 76 million pounds is still to be paid in yearly installments. The money was promised to England as settlement of English claims to land in Ire I and. Well, today’s development brings to a swift climax a crisis that has been threatening ever since DeValera has loomed to the foreground as the head of the government at Dublin. The way he has been behaving this spring The northern part of the Middle West is in the grip of a blizzard this evening. Half a dozen states are blanketed in deep snow. And with the snow came a raging wind. One airplane crash is reported in the howling blizzard. Chicago reports several casualties. The storm, as described by the United Press dispatch in the New York Sun, seems to have been most unusual. It started with a blast of lightning and a crash of thunder. And then came the wind and the snow. And both oceans on either side of this broad continent are caught in the grip of this exceedingly widespread spell of stormy weather. The great war squadrons of the United States, which have been holding maneuvers off Hawaii, are right now fighting their way through one of the worst storms in years. But of course the most unfortunate news concerning this misbehaving weather comes from the South. Every fresh report increases the damage done by the series of cyclones that have swept a whole group of states. The brunt of the nad tornado hit Alabama, and left behind it a trail of almost unbelievable Jestruct ion. And then the cyclone seems to have broken into sections, which swept in different directions, some raising lavoc on a northward trai I through rennessee, Kentucky and southern Indiana. Another blast of the storm shot eastward and raised cain in Georgia and South Carolina. The New York World-Telegram prints 2IQEMS - 3 Page. a series of cyclone stories which tell of towns devastated and isolated farm houses destroyed, i th scores of people killed and hundreds injured. Houses were picked up and carried bodily away. Railroad cars and other rolling stock were piled up in crazy confusion. And human beings were snatched up by the fury of the twister and hurled through the air for long distances, sometimes as much as a quarter of a mile. And in some cases victims caught by the raging hand of the storm simply disappeared, and have no^^been found.y-&t-» In one place there was a lumber yard, and masses of planks and beams were picked up by the cyclone and sent driving through the air like giant catapu l ts . Public swear. iin agreement has been reached on the subject of the sales tax — an agreement to fight the matter out right away. Both the friends and the opponents of the much-debated tax measure reached an understanding today concerning the procedure to be followed in coming to a decision. Both said — *cs, let1 s have a showdown right away — letTs have a decisive vote. They agreed to give the sales tax the right-of-way over the other parts of the tax bill. ihey also decided to have a quick vote concerning the tax on estates — that is, inheritance tax. it is proposed to raise the inheritance tax as high as forty per cent. Tonight we have a list of ten more cities, all of them sizeable and important places. They add their thousands of ballots to the millions that we have already had. Berkeley, the home of the University of California, votes 1,138 for prohibition and g,510 against, Columbus, Ga., SO? votes dry, 799 votes wet. Evanston, Illinois, gives us 588 for prohibition, 1,783 against. Then we have Council Bluffs, Iowa, with 483 in favor of the 18th Amendment and 1,573 registering a protest.
