LIVERMORE In another mood, a different key, is the case of Jesse Livermore, the dazzling speculator of Wall Street. Like Samuel Insull he was a giant among the men who manipulate money and play the game of high finance. And like Insull too he is broke - bankrupt. He owes two and a quarter million dollars’, his assets arejsne hundredAeighty~five thousand. A little while ago the headlines were full of Jesse Livermore's disappearance. He did a strange vanishing act, reappeared just as strangely. No clear and convincing explanation was given of where he had been. One rumor current was that he had been having financial troubles. Now his bankruptcy is announced. Livermore was unique among the glittering personalities j > of Wall Street, lie was known as the boy plunger. Al%o sewi^ tales were told his daring and spectacular adventures among the risings and fallings, upshoots and downdrops of the stock quotations. And during the past his own fortunes have been as much of a dizzy up and down as those same stock quotations for which he * pathetic finality that echoes in Insull's story is played, LIVERMORE absent from Jesse Livermoref We are told that he has been bankrupt three times before. He went flat, made a new fortune, went flat again a series of ups and downs like the bouncing of a rubber (2J> ball. You sense a distinct element of bounce in this latest & bankruptcy chapter in the story of Jesse Livermore. MITCHELL The war news tonight concerns a war of words. On one side we have that doughty champion of aeronautical and verbal fields of battle. General Billy Mitchell, On the other side we see the President of the Curti sb -Wright Corporation, whose words are fewer, but of a blasting emphasis, Let*s see what General Mitchell says and then what Tom Morgan, President of the Curtiss-Wright has to offer in rebuttal;- ■L'he General declared in a speech that the Curtiss- Wright Corporation and United Air Transport controlled, between them, the aviation industry of the United States, "These two concerns," proclaims General Mitchell, "present a united front to any third party, including the Government of the United States. They monopolize the manufacture of commercial air­ plane and war plane engines in this country. These groups maintain a pool of patents that discourages the offer and adoption of any aviation improvement or invention from without and removes all incentive to make any such improvement or invention." MITCHELL - 2 Strong words from the General. And, strong likewise are the words from the President of Curtiss-Wright. "Utterly false," declares Tom Morgan, "Utterly untrue -- we demand a retraction." He has written a letter calling upon General Mitchell to retact publicly and take back - the hard things he said. So General Billy Mitchell, former head of the Air Service, and atomy petrel of American aviation seems to be in a flaming controversy again. But then hot water seems to be Billy Mitchell^ native element. His enemies say "hot air". p' HARLAN This afternoon I heard a thing that startled me a hit. It was the bald statements "This is one of the most law-abiding communities In this country. i And It was spoken of Harlan County, where the old wildest phase of gun totirig and shootIn'g it out Is supposed to abound. "They do tote guns and they do shoot It out," my informant continued paradoxially, never-the-lees it is a law abiding community - as communities go'.1 ,This bit of enigmatic kuuah * -is was propounded^by Kyle Whitehead, City Editor of the Harlan Daily Enterprise, which has been conducting a fight against the promiscuous possession and use of fire arms "Last year," explained Editor Whitehead,*we had t- fifty-six homicides.1* Sounds bad. It is bad^ ^But^'he pointed out *fwe had no robberies. ^ He told me that the crime of theft was amazingly rare in these mountains. Money is transported in a free and easy way that would make the big cities open their eyes, no armed guards, few precautions. We all know about jury duty. We all know izitdt in normal times the law-abiding patriotic American, full of civic pride, all but breaks his neck to duck jury duty. For the past couple of years however such has not been the case. When the depression came it was noted that Americans were more and more inclined to do their duty by serving on juries. Some of them actually wrote in and asked for jury jobs. Maybe they suddenly acquired more civic virtue, more reverence for the law. ‘Bw ^old blooded opinionjthough,nseL it by saying that in hard times people did^nit mind picking up a few dollars by doing jury duty. Prospective jurors are trying to worm and wiggle their way out. It may mean that civic virtue and reverence for the law is decreasing throughout the land. The cow fell clean out of the pasture sure as you’re born* Fell plum onto a coal car loaded with our Harlan County soft coal, which was on it’s way to a chemical by-products plant in Chicago. When that coal got to Chicago it was analyzed and tested and the report come back somethin’ wonderful. It said that our Kentucky coal has all the necessary ingredients — induing butter fat and beef steak* I have been a bit leery of that Rasputin trial over in London* It seemed to have the savor of press agenting about it* The cunning finger of the press agent, however, seems less likely - since a British jury has granted heavy damages in the libel suit prosecuted by the wife of Prince Yousousoff* She sue^ \ American film company for libel on the grounds that she was represented in the film Rasputin and The Zxpx Empress in such phase A as to damage her reputation* As I see it, the unique thing about the whole affair is the spectacle of a man on the witness stand testifying openly and proudly that he had committed a murder.
