·· A Message-
from President Foy
February 19, 197~
Dear M~b~rs of the . Community:
It
is
with deep sadness that
l
must tell you about the tragic -
event th_at occured on campus last night. Shelley Sperling, a
·freshm~m resiqent student, was fatally shot yesterday evening
in. the dining·hall; She was allegedly killed by Louis Acevedo,
who is
a
student:at Dutchess Comm1,.mity College and is someone
with whom Shelley had been ~cquainted before entering Marist.
Acevedo had ~llegedly assaulted Shelley last September on _the
Water Works property; he was currently on bail awaiting trial
on charges of first degree assault and attempted murder.
The College Security Office was called yesterday at
5:45
p.m.
··· by Shelley, who reported that Acevedo was oi:i campus. Security
.. officers went to th~. c;impus cafeteria · immediately. While
security was responding, Acevedo entered the food service
manager's office where Shelley had placed tl,le call. At least two
,. shots were subsequently fired.- . ·
·
As our security force was responding, Town of Poughkeepsie
police were·calle_d to the campus. They were ~ater assisted by
State . Police officers and . Sheriff's - deputies. Town~ of
- Pougpkeepsie Police Chief Richard Hellmann was in charge of
the investigation. After taking information.from witnesses, the
decision was made to enter the thefood, service office. Acevedo .-
. offered no resistance and was taken . into custody by Town
:Police. He.is being held on s_econd degree murder charges.
·
You will be advised about memorial services that are now
_being planned by students and other members of the College
community.
A
tragedy ofthis proportion touches~us all, and we ·
can only say thatwe snare the.deep grief now-felt by Shelley's
.

you
can
help
them.
They've got a long way to
go.-ln_a world that isn't easy.
But with someone's help,
they'll make it. What they need
is a friend. Someone to act as
confidant and guide. Perhaps,
it could be yOu as a Salesian
Priest or Brother.
The Salesians of St. John
Bosco were founded in 1859 to _
·
serve youth. Unlike_ other orders whose a~ostolate has c~angeq
with varying c·onclitions, the Salesians alw_ays have been - and
will be, youth oriented. Today we're helping to prepare young-
sters for the world that awaits them tomorrow._ Not an easy
task but one which we welcome.
_
Arid how do we go about it? By following the precepts_o!
our founder, Don Bosco. To crowd out evil with reason,, rehg1on
and kindness with a method of play, learn and pray. We re
trying lo build better communities by helping to create better men.
As a Salesian, you are guaranteed the chan~e to help
the young in a wide range
~f endeavor .•. as guidance counsel-
ors, technical and academic teachers, as coaches,
. .
psychologists ... in boys club~, summe~ ~amps ... as m1ss1on-
aries. And you are given the kmd of trammg you need to
achieve your aims.
_
The Salesian family is a large one (we are the th1~d l~rgest.
order) but a warm one. A community- w:th an enthusiastic family
feeling where not only our talents are shared but our short-
. comings, too. If you feel as w~ do, that service to yo_uth can be
an important mission in your life, we welc_ome your interest.
