Bill Palmeri
This is the first in a series on
Rockpile articles written for each
issue of the Ci_rcle by members of the
WMCR staff. For our debut this
semester, we're simply going to recap
'the summer of '81.
It began with a nationwide tour of
.The Clash bringing rock and roll back
toJts original setting. Dance clubs ex-
tend~d theiri_nitial bookings to nearly
twelve shows. The Clash filled Bonds
international Casino in New York City
to capacity each night, presenting
their own choices of unknown bands
as warm-ups.
The - summer provided few new
bands of major significance, despite
the sudden audience awareness of
such bands as The GoGos. Commer-
cially established bands continued to
hold their own; profits went to those
bands whose music was openly ap-
preciative of the classics of early rock
and roll.:
· -
·
True to form, the Rolling Stones
presented their anticipated summer
• contribution without any addition to
their standard three chords. The
critics continued to praise the efforts
of such bands as the Kinks in light of
their conceptual commentaries, incor-
porating easily accessible sounds and
sociology. The well-respected man of
rock and roll Ray Davies, lead singer of
the Kinks, got his message across.
·
Now that we brought you up to date,
we would like to leave you with a ,
QUESTION: How can a drug-culture
associated band place number one on
world-wide album charts, in this hit-
conscious music industry? The solu-
tion was an event on July 17th at
Madison Square Garden, when five
veteran musicians took the stage and
proceeded to perform a clinic on con-
cert rock and roll. As musicians they
displayed a tightness obvious only
within the most elite bands.
