THE RUSTY CALLOW MEMORIAL REGATTA
The Rusty Callow Memorial Regatta is held in honor of the late
Russell (Rusty) Callow, fonner coach of crew at both the University
'
of Pennsylvania and the United States Nava
l
Academ
y
. His 1952 Navy
crew won the Olympics for the United States. Rusty Callow was elected
to the Helms Rowing Hall of fame, as were both his 1952 and 1953
Navy Crews.

Trophies will be awarded to winners of the following events: varsity
heavy-weight, varsity lightweight, varsity fours, second varsity, and
freshmen. An addition, an overall point trophy will be awarded.
The trophy to be awarded the winner of the light-weight eight race
is a new award which has been names the Kenneth F. Burns Cup in recognition
of the contribution of Mr. Burns not only to the Rusty Callow Memoria
l
Rowing Association but to rowing in general. Mr. Burns is crew coach at
Shrewsbury High School, and is a former coach at WPI.
In addition to
being a founder of the R.C.M.R.A., he is also coordinator of the E.A.R.C.
Sprints, which will be held on Lake Quinsigamond next weekend. Mr. Burns
is a member of the Helms Rowing Hall of Fame.
The trophy to be awarded the winner of the freshmen race is named
the "Doc Melder Trophy" to honor the memory of the late Dr. Eugene Melder,
of Clark University. Dr. Melder started crew at Clark and was also a
founder of the R.C.M.R.A.
The total point trophy will be based upon points awar
d
ed in the following
four races: Varsity Heavy-Weight, Second Varsity Heavy-Weight, Freshmen,
Light-Weight Varsity. The winner of the Varsity Heavy-Weight race will
receive eight points; second place, seven; third place, six; etc., and
the winners of the other races will receive six points; second place, five,
third place, four, etc,

Note: Lanes for afternoon races, where not indicated, will be drawn
after the morning heats.
