“Passing through the gorge and coming out into the valley beyond we see this beautiful temple in full view in front of us carved like a cameo from the cliff. This temple was carved from the mountain two thousand years ago and seems to be of a corrupt Roman-Grecian style of architecture, indicating that the Romans even penetrated to this part of far-off Arabia. Notice the mammoth size of the columns compared to our men standing at their base. On the right are some niches, the remains of the ladder used by the sculptors.”

-Lowell Thomas
“With Lawrence in Arabia” (1919)
