Main House: Mansion & Aphrodite

Item

Description

The Aphrodite moored in the Hudson River below the Esopus mansion. Carrère & Hastings arranged the landscaping to act as a framework for the mansion, but it also served to observers in the mansion as a framework for the Aphrodite.

Note the outline of a house hidden behind trees just above the bow of the Aphrodite. We have no knowledge of who built this house, which was along the road leading towards the left where Archibald Russell's landing had been established. Even the foundations seem to have been obliterated.

Payne's yacht, the Aphrodite, moored below the main house.
