Railroad Tunnel 2
The tunnel as it looked in 2010. Anticipating more traffic after the completion of Longview Park, tunnel access was controlled by traffic signals. The buildings just above the railroad tracks are the Poughkeepsie Water Works. There is a similar underpass at Quiet Cove, just north of the College that rovided access to the shore land. There is a boathouse at Quiet Cove which was used by the Naval Academy during the historic Poughkeepsie Regattas. -
Holy Comforter Episcopal Church
When the Bech family lived at 57 Market Street, they were next to Christ Episcopal Church. The Church experienced a fire, and the replacement was built at Carroll Street, in the southern part of the city. The parishoners who lived in the north sector of the city and town found this a considerable distance, and built a second church, the Church of the Holy Comforter, on Davies Place very close to the current railroad station. The two Bech sons were baptized in Christ Church (whether the original or the Carrol street church is uncertain). However, Elizabeth and her son George attended Holy Comforter, and supported the church faithfully. George Bech was buried from Holy Comforter in 1890 and Elizabeth in 1900. In her will she left $1,000 to the Church. -
Gindra flowers 3
David Gindra was highly respected as a gardener. He was consulted by other estate owners for the design of their land and gardens. Although he had not supervised the gardens after the turn of the century, the Marist Brothers diary in 1908 indicates that the overgrowth of eight years hid elegant shrubs and flowers. These photos, taken as Kodachrome slides in the period 1945-1955 may well represent a continuation of the Gindra legacy. The Brothers worked on very tight budgets, with any available funds applied to more important priorities. But many Brothers were skilled at gardening, and with the labor of the Novices and Student Brothers, it is probable that they were able to restore many of the trees and shrubs that Gindra had installed. -

Early View of Greystone Building Sketch
In this he was following the dictates of Andrew Jackson Dowling, who wrote a highly respect manual describing estate design. Note that Lienau's sketch of Greystone shows a stone facing, while the stable at the left has a stone foundation but wooden superstructure. -

Henri Monad Braem 2
Above is a sketch of Ethelwyn, Henri Monad Braem's country home in Lenox MA, which in the nineteenth century was another favorite spot for country homes for the affluent. The Braem family were active in New York City social circles, and traditionally the wealth passed to the sons, especially after widow Elizabeth married Edvard Bech. The Braem family traced its roots back to Denmark. Henri worked closely with Edward Bech and continued a member of Edward Bech & Co until his death in December 1899. -

Boathouse area 3
This vintage photo shows the Cornell, California and Washington boathouses, and in the right edge of the photo a portion of the kitchen/chow house for the three boathouses. Besides the three named universities, other competitors may have shared the space. The Cornell boathouse has been restored by Marist College and is used for shell storage. The upper floor has become a popular site for lunches and dinners for college-related groups. -
Boathouse area 2
This photo was taken about 1963 from an upper floor of the Leo Dormitory. The kitchen building and Washington boathouse near the California and Cornell boathouses is gone. The California boathouse has white siding, and the Cornell boathouse is just above it (to the right in this photo). The Marist boathouse is on what was originally a cove filled in by debris from leveling the Dutton yard, so was not available to the City of Poughkeepsie for construction of additional boathouses. For many years, the custom was for students to paint the large letter M on the rock across the Hudson (not where the letter W is painted ... further north). -
Martin Boathouse 3
The Martin boathouse celebrates its 50th birthday in 2012. -
Martin Boathouse 2
View of boathouse row before construction of the Martin Boathouse, taken from one of the unfinished upper floors of the Leo Dormitory. The California and Cornell boathouses were used by the high schools, and Dutton Lumber began shrinking its supply of aging lumber. -
