The Marist College Seal is composed of two concentric circles on the
outer of which is engraved Marist College, Poughkeepsie,
N.
Y. On the
inner section are the interlaced letters
A
and M with the date 1946 at the
foot of the letters and twelve stars above them. The whole is crowned
with the motto: Orare et Laborare (To pray and to work). The letters
A
and M are the symbols of Mary, as are the twelve stars, reminding the
viewer of the traditions of the founders of Marist College, the Marist
Brothers.
The word Reynard is of French descent meaning fox.
Traditionally, a fox is thought to be red and white; thus
giving us our school mascot, the Red Fox.

Note

Your years at Marist College
are steps to your future.
Do not look back with regret
on things you may have missed.
Instead, use your past experiences
to push you forward,
Never losing sight of your destination.
Though you may stumble,
keep your head up with pride,
As you continue climbing upward,
towards your hopes,
your goals,
your dreams.

Dedication
18
Throughout our four
years
at Marist there have been many
people who we have taken for granted as we stroll about campus,
but without whom the campus would not run. The Staff at Marist
College have continually made an effort to provide friendship,
understanding and guidance to the students.

19

Without this special group of people the
paperwork would not get done
,
there
would be no heat or hot water
,
food would
not reach your stomach, but the grass
would reach your knees
.

For these reasons and many more, the
Class of 1989 dedicates their
y
earbook
to the Staff of Marist College for going
the extra mile, as a token of our un
s
po-
ken thanks and appreciation
.

36
Our first impression of the Marist College
campus was that of a peaceful, natural seren-
ity. This included the old historical buildings,
as well as the promise of new ones to be built.
Some of us will even remember the artistic
sculptures found in front of Champagnat that
enhanced the uniqueness of our campus
.
However, as we became involved in our
academic studies and active social lives, it
became almost impossible to find the time to
enjoy the natural scenery on campus.
This year, we once again notice the sur-
roundings that first impressed us when we
arrived at Marist College
.
With all these
changes that are occurring on campus, we
can be confident that the promise of growth
still remains.

Making friends and tak-
ing chances, learning more
outside the classroom than
in. Whether in the cafe, the
library or wandering aim-
lessly around the halls,
good times are made and
friendships began.

f

54
As freshmen, we came to school both young and scared. Every-
one else seemed to know where they were going, what classes to
take, and how to have a social lite. Too often, we felt lost in the
crowd; and who knew where Marist East was? It felt like it would
take forever to learn everything there was to know about Marist
College. We soon learned that we could attempt to take on lite at
Marist as we stepped into our sophomore year.
Our second year appeared to be much better. We could find the
buildings and the classes, (well
..
. except tor Lowell Thomas!) but
we still were not able to feel completely at ease. The classes
began to get harder and we lost touch with some of our freshman
friends. Fortunately, it did not take long to acquire new ones.
Many times, these friendships were formed in the clubs, activities,
and sports which we now dared to take part in at Marist.
.
Our junior year was great! We were almost seniors and most of
us were in the townhouses and garden apartments
.
We thought
we knew it all and were ready to conquer the world. We now knew
when to study and when to party. Many of us turned 21 and could
go out on the town at night. We thought we had it made.
Then it happened
-
our senior year arrived and all our anxieties
came rushing back. It happened so fast. In just six months we
would be in the "real" world and on our own. No longer will we be
able to do what we want, when we want to do it. Soon our time
here will come to an end and we'll begin building lives of our own.
As we approach the end of our time at Marist, we look back at the
steps we took with a sense of respect and admiration tor the
people we encountered at college. As we leave behind the securi-
ty of the walls of Marist College, we feel confident that we can
make a difference
.

Students at Marist have always
found their own
"nitch"
in the col-
lege community through Marist's
variety of clubs and activities
.
Aca-
demics, social involvement, and
hobbies are only a few of the inter-
ests students pursue by becoming
involved
in a campus club and join-
ing in college activities.

Commuter Union
A
large part of the Marist Community is made up of people in
surrounding areas who commute to
classes
on a daily basis. The
Commuter Union is an organization that plans functions and events for
its members, in an effort to make Marist College a social learning
place, as well as a place for academics.
124

The members of this club take the time to make
Marist a temporary home for the day
.
The Commuter
Loun8e is the place where socials are held
,
as well as
a place to gain campus information. The Commuter
Union is active in makin8 the effort to unite the
Marist community.

Events
An important part of any college
community is the events that are of-
fered by the clubs and organizations
on campus. The clubs, team
s
and or-
ganizations are comprised of stu-
dents who are willing to give a little
more and enhance the Marist commu-
nity
.
Special recognition goes to those
students who take pride in providing
alternatives to the everyday life-
styles on campus.

The sports ottered at
Marist are found not only on Varsity levels but on

With either program the students who choose to

In Appreciation

We would like to thank
those special people and friends who were
willing
to
sacrifice
their time in
giving us guidance and help
to meet those impossible deadlines.
Our sincere
appreciation to
...
Our advisor, Wess Bowdish-for his patience and
support
during
the Jong production of this book.
Betty Yeaglin and
Bob
Lynch for their time and
advice.
We would like to extend a very personal thank you to several
of our
friends, who without their help
there may not have been a /989 edition of
the
Reynard
. ..
Kristen Pierson-for
your
unending help as well as for dinner
.
(Next time it's on
us/)
Chrissy Domurat-for your helpful ways and gentle words.
Karen O
'
Connor-our secretary-yes,
you can
have the day
off/
Allison Robbins-thanks for catching Marist on film.
Claire Lynch- for learning how to draw many, many lines.
(And
to my other housemates-thanks
for
putting up with me. I can
'
t wait to live home again/)
Lynaire Burst-you always showed up at the most opportune time
.
Bob Higgins-may your life flow as easy as
your
words.
Mike
Kinane and Bob Davis-thanks for the use of the room and
your
pictures.
(Yes, the answering
machine is plugged in-sorry/)
To Arax
'
Photography Studio-for your services and your kindness. Thank
you.
And to Kevin Byrne, our Josten's representative-thanks
for all you've
done
and the confidence you
gave us, especially at the end when we needed it most/
To anyone we may have omitted-please know
your
help was not
forgotten or taken for granted.
And to
all those who gave us pictures we so needed-yes,
you
will get them back/I! Thanks
.
,,

Editor's Note
Upon taking the task of Reynard editors, we knew the job would not be easy; but we
were willing to take on this challenge in order to have a yearbook for our senior year.
Perhaps our expectations of the kind of book we
f.vanted
to produce were set too high, as
there were many unexpected obstacles in our way. We did the best we could do under
the circumstances and are satisified with the results.
As you look through the pages of this book, we hope you can capture the essence of
your Marist years as we have illustrated them for you. Upon looking at your yearbook in
the future, we hope the pages will remind you of shared memories and stolen moments
we have enjoyed at Marist.
Best of luck to the Class of 1989 -
Judi Baker and Wendy Bender
