Before the first
day of school
,
freshman
dorms
were
quiet
and
peaceful. But
when September 6th rolled
around,
these dorms-Sheahan,
Leo,
Marion,
and
part
ofChampagnat
-
were
bubbling
with excited and over-
whelmed
freshmen.
They
carried
milk
crates,
boxes,
and suitcases filled
with life's necessities,
as
parents
trailed behind
with
the
extras
.
As each freshman
moved in, remembering
friends
left
at
home,
and meet-
ing new
friends,
the freshman
residence halls
acquired
a
warmer, homier
atmosphere.
For these people,
this
day brought
an immense change
to
their
lives. Within
the
walls of
these dorms, they
would
laugh
and cry
-
making lifelong friends,
studying for tests, and experi-
encing
4:00
a.m.
fire drills. They
would
mature
,
and
begin
their climb
toward the future.
As
the days
and weeks
progressed,
each
person
would find
his
or
her place in the Marist
College com-
munity.
Personal independence
would
be
gained
by
r
ealizing and acknowledging the
responsibilities
which
now
exist
in their new lives. By
joining
clubs,
sports
teams, and various other activities,
their
adjustment
to
college
life
would
be made
a
little
easier.

The
Campus Center
is
an
integral

life
of
the

The
Campus Center is the focal

for activities
for all members of

In Memorium
Gregory Kilgariff
1946-1987
Gregory Kilgariff came to Marist College in 1971 as
a
instructor
of Economics. Shortly after, he received his Master of Arts degree
from the University of Notre Dame.
In
1977, after having served
as
the Sheahan Housemaster for three years, Dr. Kilgariff
completed
his Doctoral work, also from the University of Notre Dame. Tenured
in I 978 and named "Teacher of the Year" in 1980, truly demon-
strates Dr. Kilgariffs achievemenets with students and administra-
tion alike. He was promoted from assistant professor to associate
professor in 1981 and served as the Acting Assistant Vice President
for Academic Affairs in 1986, as well as the Acting Director of the
MBA
Program.
Dr. Kilgariff was an excellent teacher who dedicated his life to his
students. He is remembered as writing; "Education is not achieved
by merely talking at the student in the classroom. I believe that
a
good teacher talks with students both in and out of the classroom,"
According to his colleagues, "Dr. Kilgariff is a solidly capable
teacher, gifted with the ability to lecture with clarity and flair and
able to hold the attention of students and engage their interest
...
In
addition, we find he possesses an quality found only in the exception-
al teacher; that of presenting material so clearly that it is within the
grasp of all his students."
For sixteen years, members of our college community have been
blessed with the achievments of Gregory Kilgariff: A man, who when
asked to reflect about his teaching at Marist, could simply and
sincerely say, "I like it here
.
"
We are glad you liked it here
...
and
we will miss you.
He will be remembered by us all.

Dedication
Each year the
REYNARD
is dedicated to a member of the Marist commu-
nity who has exhibited a certain quality and given significant contributions to
the college, especially the graduating class.
For some
,
it has been a special kindness, or one's gift of compa
s
sion
.
For
others
,
it has been a particular inspiration
.
And for others still
,
it has been a
never-ending sincere loyalty to the students of Mar
i
st College. For these
reasons it should be no
s
urprise that thi
s
edition of the REYNARD is
dedicated to Stephen Bentley.
In the summer of 1982, Stephen came to Marist, where he started the
upperclass mentor program in recognition of student's needs for guidance and
support through all four years of their college experience
.
His loyalty and
respect for his students went beyond his daily office hours
.
By living in
Champagnat Hall he remained in close contact to students and student life.
His work as Student Affairs advisor to the Student Judicial Board also
illustrated his committment to student rights and opinions. In addition to his
love of students
,
Stephen will be greatly remembered for his deep love of
music
.
Both students and faculty will recall passing by the Fireside Lounge
and hearing an accomplished pianist at his best.
Last June, Stephen received his Masters degree in social work and is now
living in Colorado, fulfilling a lifelong dream
.
In whatever capacity -
mentor, colleague or friend -
Stephen Bentley will
be remembered as a unique person who has made our four years at Marist
College a learning (and awesome!) experience
.
Good luck out West, Stephen .
..
and thank you
.

"on being happy'
i once wrote a song
that no one sang,
i once wrote a poem
that no one read,
i once painted a picture
that no one saw,
and i wondered . . .
why did i do these things?
then one day
i sang my song
and i read my poem
and i saw my picture
and i knew why
and i was happy

This page completes the 1988 edition of THE REYNARD. SO many yearbooks pledge that their
staffs have tried to capture most of the memories of the times spent at their institutions. Yet, they also
apologize for not being able to include everything
.
This book makes neither committment. Staffing and
producing a yearbook can not be accomplished by a handful of students as has been the scenario for
years past and is also true for this year's senior class. Hopefully, however, THE REYNARD 1988 will
foster an appreciation of "the best years of our lives" in the days ahead.
A debt of gratitude and appreciation is owed to Kevin Byrne of Jostens Printing and Publishing for all
his support, encouragement and initiative in the production of this yearbook; to Rosemary Ragone and
the photographic personnel at ARAX Studio for their fine work and expediency with our deadlines; to
College Activities office and Betty Yeaglin for her cooperation, reliablity and "stubborness" to get this
published BEFORE graduation (Thank you!)
;
and to the students who were asked at the last minute to
sacrifice their time for this book
.
Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 1988
.
May THE REYNARD always be a reminder to
you of the special times you've shared in a place we all called "home" ... here in Poughkeepsie, New
York at Marist College.
