Life at Marist -
from its frustrating September beginning, through
four formative and decisive years, to the long
··
awaited final examination -
is a thing simple, a thing complex, a thing shallow, a thing of depth, a
thing too pulsating to bang
suspended between the covers
of a simple book. Our joys
and our sorrows, our achieve-
ments and our failures collec-
tively bear witness to this fact.
To say that our years at Marist
are laced with memories that
shall be valued throughout our
entire lives, would make us
guilty of gross understatement.

But these memories, deep-
seated as they may be, often
become misplaced in the new
whirling life we are about to
enter. However, it is also our
realization that, in the fullness
of life, these memories will re-
appear, from time to time, in
the service of stale conversa-
tion, mouthed in the throats of
old men. This is of small im-
port. This is expected. What
will endure, however, as an in-
delible impression immune to
the erosion of time is, the ex-

ample of Marist College as the
matrix for a Christian Gentle-
man.

when minds, awakening from a summer's sleep
became alert for the academic year ahead.
In the beginning we sought to
establish ourselves ... meet
new people, familiarize our-
selves with our surroundings
and take leave of old ties.

wrestling team. Yet, the matmen
gave a good account of themselves in
their first inter-collegiate season.
Weightlifting, still an infant sport at Marist,
received its first breath this year as the Dutchesj
County Competition was sponsored on Campus.
Coach Carl Lenich's ''green" lifters did well agains

their experienced competition, as several Marist
men finished high in the honors.

Under the direction of Tom Wade, the Marist
Varsity had what may be called a ''successful

Every one of Marist College's night school students has an unfinished
story to tell-of how he happens to be coming here now, at this particular
time in his life, under these comparatively trying circumstances, and of
where he thinks he is going.
The average night school student is a man of many parts: he is bread-
winner, church-goer and scholar. He often is not a very active participant
in school affairs, but he does bring to the task of learning an invaluable
long-view maturity, for he is a stranger to neither frustration nor success.
In short, he is the kind of man who rises early whether he wants to or
not, works all day at a job that might very well he nothing more than a
means to an end for him, feels guilty if he "hits" the books instead of
romping with the kids, (and equally guilty if he romps with the kids
instead of "hitting the books"), and puts in from two to four hours of
class time to round out the day. And then, as he heads toward the nearly
empty parking lot after his last class, he might look back at the calm
serenity of the library windows and consider how nice it would be to
merely go to school, and have the time he'd like to read and study and
discuss-and in that moment, as he considers that pleasant but impossible
prospect, he may think of the closing lines of Frost's poem:
"But I have promises to keep.
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.'

Life at Marist -
from its frustrating September beginning, through
four formative and decisive years, to the long

awaited final examination -
is a thing simple, a thing complex, a thing shallow, a thing of depth, a
thing too pulsating to bang
suspended between the covers
of a simple book. Our joys
and our sorrows, our achieve-
ments and our failures collec-
tively bear witness to this fact.
To say that our years at Marist
are laced with memories that
shall be valued throughout our
entire lives, would make us
guilty of gross understatement.

But these memories, deep-
seated as they may be, often
become misplaced in the new
whirling life we are about to
enter. However, it is also our
realization that, in the fullness
of life, these memories will re-
appear, from time to time, in
the service of stale conversa-
tion, mouthed in the throats of
old men. This is of small im-
port. This is expected. What
will endure, however, as an in-
delible impression immune to
the erosion of time is, the ex-

matrix for a Christian Gentle-

became alert for the academic year ahead.
In the beginning we sought to
establish ourselves ... meet
new people, familiarize our-
selves with our surroundings
and take leave of old ties.

Every one of Marist College's night school students has an unfinished
story to tell-of how he happens to be coming here now, at this particular
time in his life, under these comparatively trying circumstances, and of
where he thinks he is going.
The average night school student is a man of many parts: he is bread-
winner, church-goer and scholar. He often is not a very active participant
in school affairs, but he does bring to the task of learning an invaluable
long-view maturity, for he is a stranger to neither frustration nor success.
In short, he is the kind of man who rises early whether he wants to or
not, works all day at a job that might very well he nothing more than a
means to an end for him, feels guilty if he "hits" the books instead of
romping with the kids, (and equally guilty if he romps with the kids
instead of "hitting the books"), and puts in from two to four hours of
class time to round out the day. And then, as he heads toward the nearly
empty parking lot after his last class, he might look back at the calm
serenity of the library windows and consider how nice it would be to
merely go to school, and have the time he'd like to read and study and
discuss-and in that moment, as he considers that pleasant but impossible
prospect, he may think of the closing lines of Frost's poem:
"But I have promises to keep.
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.'
