A yearbook -
Just what do you put in it and what do you leave out?
What is it that makes a school, and what is it that makes this particular year
and this particular group of people different and worth remembering? Is it
that there is really anything to record, or are there just faces and names, faces
and names, which will lie for years in attics and cellars and die of neglect?
We race through the year and follow our schedules and our lists and now,
at the end of the year, from a mass of photographs and words, we try to
collate all the events of a year into some meaningful whole. Where, after all,
are we going? And why? Who are we and what makes us, our generation,
our society, our age, ~ifferent and worth remembering? Who will, when we
are gone, remember us and what we did?
Marist is no longer a small, young school. We're large now, there are
too many of us, doing too many different things, to know everyone. The
people we meet treat those who graduated ahead of us, all too often, only as
faces and names. These underclassmen, after all, never met the class of
'66
or '65 or
'64
and how could they treat them otherwise? And what of us? Does
the spirit of
1
67,
that nebulous something which we all recognize but can't
quite nail down, does that leave with us? We, who came here when Kennedy
was President and Vietnam only a name, what will we leave behind, and what
have we accomplished?
All we can do is leave this outline, these bits and pieces and hope that in
some way the direction is shown to our heritage.
Dennis Goonan

Dedication
4

We, the class of 1967, are honored to dedicate our Yearbook to Mrs.
Elizabeth O'Brien, Recorder of the College. Always warm, always personable,
always wifling to take a minute even when the work seems endless, Mrs.
O'Brien's friendly smile will stay with us through the years.

provocative, informative
,
and interesting. His facility ir
Dutchess County provides an invaluable service
to
nu
merous victims of Alcoholism. Dr
.
Patten was one of
f
number of lecturers sponsored by the Psychologica
Society during the academic year. The lecture was at
-
tended by about two hundred people and Dr
.
Patter
was so well received that the discussion period whid
followed was difficult
to
bring to
'
a close.

Ausubel and Friend
117
On May 16, 1967, the students and faculty were privileged
to hear Dr
.
David P. Ausubel, M.D., Ph
.
D. lecture on "Juvenile
Delinquency in Middle Class Society." Dr. Ausubel is best
known, on campus, as the author of
Ego Development and
the Personalit
y
Disorders
,
which is a text employed by Br.
Daniel Kirk, Chairman of the Psychology Department, in his
course. In addition, Dr. Ausubel has published over a dozen
other texts in the field of Psychology.
Dr
.
Ausubel is one of the leading contemporary personality
theorists. He has also been involved in motivation theory and
cognitive processes
.
Dr. Ausubel is presently with the Ontario
Institute for Studies in Education, of Toronto, Canada, where
he conducts research. He also maintains two teaching positions
at the University of Toronto, one in the Department of Psy-
chology, and the other in the Medical School.
Dr. Ausubel flew down from Toronto at the inviation of
the Psychological Society, especially to give the lecture. It was
thought that inviting him would result in a worthwhile ex-
perience because of the wide campus in-
terest in his written work. The lecture was
attended by 300 persons. Although Dr.
Ausubel does not entertain his audiences,
his presentation was one of the year's best
in terms of depth and quality.
