his, the fourtieth
anniversary of Marist,
is also our fourth and last
year at this
institution.
There are many
experiences that will not
be forgotten, and many
friends that we would not
forget.
I
n this book, a whole four years
have had to be captured. With
mere photographs and simple
pages, it has not been an easy
job: after parties, the Pub(?),
Berties, Booze cruises, Rennies
.
.
I hope I've been able to capture
those good times
.
The photographs
are here to preserve those
memories
.
After graduation, they're
all that's left for you, enjoy .

Men with a mission to accomplish!

Dedication
Over the past four years, we have witnessed the estab-
lishment of Marian Hall, the Townhouses and the Garden
Apartments. We have seen the campus grow across Route
9 to Marist East and now, walking around the campus,
we
are viewing the construction of the
Lowell
Thomas Com-
munications Center.
Modern technologies have helped laborers to construct
these buildings quickly and efficiently. Stop for a moment .
. . try to imagine what it was like for Marist Brothers to
draft, plan, organize and to actually construct buildings on
this campus. some thirty years ago. Although the Brothers
had detailed plans and blueprints,
it
is hard to believe that
the construction was completed through the use of manual
labor.
On many occasions, we tend to take our advanced
technologies for granted, without giving the past its due
recognition. Marist Brothers deserve full credit for the birth
of various buildin~s on this campus. One particular build-
ing bears the narne
,
Donnelly Hall. Since constructed, at
different points in time, Donnelly Hall has served as a
library, a bookstore, a cafeteria, dormitories, lecture halls
and classrooms. This building was crutial to the develop-
ment and progress of Marist College. It is with this
in
mind
that we, the Class of 1986, dedicate this boo,S
1
to Brother
Nilus Donnelly, the Director of Construction at Marist
College
.
Brother Nilus came to Marist in 1952, and now resides in
the penthouse apartment in Champagnat Hall. One year
after he arrived on campus, he helped to build Our Lady
Seat of Wisdom Chapel. In 1955, he helped to build the
library and soon after, he aided in the construction of
Fontaine
"
and Adrian. Between the years of 1958 and
1961, Brother Donnelly directed the construction of the
building which later became his namesake. He helped
to
build Sheahan Hall in 1962 and in '63, he worked to
construct Leo Hall, Byrne and the Boathouse. Brother
Nilus and many other dedicated Marist Brothers worked
strenuously for long hours to create an environment con-
ducive to learning.
Brother {'Jilus ... your direction and guidance has great
-
ly helped the growth of the Marist community. We appreci-
ate and respect your selflessness
·
which assisted in making
Marist an
institution
of knowledge and wisdom. Thank you
for adding numerous dimensions to student life through
your own expertise.

In Memory
Of
Brother Noel
Smith, O.S.F.
Brother Noel Smith, O.S.F. 1931-1985
.
Born in Brooklyn, Brother Noel went on to
receive a Bachelor of Science degree at
Fordham University. A Franciscan Brother,
he taught at St. Francis Preparatory School
in Brooklyn for ten years. He later taught at
St. Anthony's School in Long Island for
twenty years. He came to Marist when he
was on a sabbatical from St. Anthony's.
Residing in Poughkeepsie, he was a full time
student in Marist College's Masters in Com-
puter Science program and he had been
serving as an adjunct instructor of mathe-
matics and computer science for two years.
Brother Noel was an excellent teacher
who dedicated his entire life to teaching.
According to Dennis J. Murray, "Although
here at Marist only a short time, Brother Noel made an immediate impact. He was a distinguished
scholar in computer science, and an excellent teacher. Our students will miss him, as will the many
friends he has made in two short years."
,
He will be remembered by us all.

May the roads rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again
May God hold you -

The River Day Poem
River Day, River ay when will it be
Its up to the seniors to dictate to thee
Today, tommorraw, no one knows
But when
it
comes, everyone goes
The teachers do
~t
like it and niether does Murray
But the students blow off classes to get
there in a hurry
The parties befo e are only a warning
no one really kn ws until River Day
mourning
The night before the serious gather
at Rennies
They drink and rink
'til
they spend all
. -
- - - - - - -
thiei ennie,
-
-
The morning of, starts with a wake up
call
The campus is woken and goes off the
wall
Kegs by the dozen arrive one by one
and people start dinking like theres
a race to be won
The seniors arrive running through the tunnel.
They dress bizarre and some carriy funnels
The seniors are on the hill, the ot ers are
kneeling
It
seems everyone has that river day
feeling
The awards are given and everyone gets
wasted
The mad dog wasn't bad, because
its not even tasted
We've been to them all, but this was the
best
Because this one is ours anc:I who cares
about the rest
Each year they say that this is
the last
But tradition must live on as it has
in the past
River Day, River Day, when will it be
No one really knows, not you or me.

To My Friends and Enemies of the Class of '86: The past four years have
been filled with memories of rememorable good times and forgetable bad
ones. The Dutch parties were filled with excitement and finals week was
filled with drama. Some of you I wish I could have killed for both good and
bad reasons and others were just there. However, my true friends know
that they will always be with me. I wish you the best of luck in the future and
I thank you. Your memory will be alive with me for the years to come. Even
though I am not graduating with you I still consider myself a member of the
class of '86 and I hope you feel the same about me. Sincerely Yours, The
Sound of 1986 J.B. K.
Liz, Terror is, where you are. You're in my knapsack's way. -

Joe Waters: Thanks for the party, next time you bring the beer! Love The
Class of 1986
To the Class of '86: The last 4 years have come and gone all too quickly.
We leave with great plans for the future, but more important are the
memories of the past. Memories that we can take with us where ever the
road leads. It has been an honor to serve such an outstanding class. Take
care, good luck and God bless. Sincerely, Your Class Officers: Mike, John,
Jim, and Lynne

's Note
Graduation, growing up and moving on, are times when future dreams and ambitions
are put aside for the moment, as people reflect upon the past Throughout this book, the
entire staff has aimed at capturing outstanding memories and experiences which have
shaped all of our lives. The staff worked long, hard hours for days on end, to meet
constraining deadlines. The staff deserves all credit for putting this whole thing together.
Without the help of dedicated and responsible people, it
never
could have materialized.
Sincere thanks to Kim Grob, Kathleen Mc Mullan, Regina Ryan and John Bird for their
support and guidance, and for working
above
and beyond the call of duty.
A special thanks to all who have gone out of their way for the cause of saving the
yearbook. Paul Belliveau also deserves credit for developing the foundations for the
completion of this book.
In the future, always take time to think outside of your own lives. Work to establish
world peace, to protect human rights, to feed the hungry, to let freedom prevail, to
suppress censorship and to question authority. Keep
in
mind that each
voice
does make
a difference.
Peace, freedom, happiness and success to the Class of 1986.
