DEDICATION .

It's hard to believe that only four short years ago the
Class of '85 arrived on campus. At the time, it seemed
like graduation was an eternity away. Many of us were
apprehensive about spending the following four years at
Marist Collegt and a number of our classmates chose
another path along the way. But those of us who came
this far feel a special unity among
We've grown together as a class as a res
of adapting to an ever-changing Mari
Transitions weren't always smooth, but '
made it because there was always someo
there to help out.
We, the Class of '85, dedicate this ye
:
book to one of the special people at Ma
ist, someone who played a significant ro
in our college lives-Sr. Eileen Hallora
1
assistant campus minister.
She came to Marist in 1981, in many wayi
a freshman like ourselves. She was new
t-
Marist when we were, and we've come th
distance together.
During those years, she was Marist's quie
.
force, going modestly about her business
And she was busy-as anyone who ever
tried to call her office knew-but she was
never too busy to stop and really find out
how things were going.
And, though she never said much about
what she was doing, it's hard to imagine
Campus Ministry or the campus without
her. Who would have organized the
Thanksgiving prayer service, the Christ-
mas midnight mass or any of
the retreats if she hadn't been
there? And how marly people
would have been all alone to
make difficult decisions if she
hadn't been willing to help?
She was the friend we needed
.
She was a shoulder to cry on, a
hug or just a kind word
.
She
was a lot of different things to
a lot of different people.
As much as the college
changed during our four y
,
ears,
one good thing stayed the sa-
me-Sr. Eileen was always
there.
Sr
.,
Eileen, thanks for every-
thing. We'll never forget you.

In Memory Of
Dr. Daniel
__
Kirk
Daniel Kirk, 1927-1984, Professor of Psychology.
Dan-
iel Kirk came to Marist College as a member of the
psychology department in September 1956, having com-
pleted (he requirements for the Ph.D. in psychology at St.
John's University the previous year. Marist College, at
that time, was undergoing transition from a school exclu-
sively committed to the education of student Marist
Brothers to a men's college open to the local community
and soon to accept resident students from beyond the
immediate commuting area. As a faculty member at this
moment of significant change in the direction of the
college, Dr. Kirk played a significant leadership role,
enjoying the confidence of the then president, Linus
R.
Foy, and serving in his stead in his absences, including a
year-Jong sabbatical. In many respects Daniel
Kirk,
to-
gether with a few key colleagues, may be regarded as one
of the founders of the
"second"
Marist College. As such
he was instrumental in the development of independent
faculty goverance and a strong faculty voice in setting
the direction for the fledgling college.
Daniel
Kirk
was the single most significant force in the
development of the psychology department which he
founded. He established the psychology major, pioneer-
ed work-study of the highest quality, set the direction for
Marist's orientation toward community psychology, was
a unique forced in bringing graduate education to Mar-
ist, and lead the department in the development of the
proposal to bring doctoral education in psychology to the
mid-Hudson valley at Marist College. Perhaps most im-
portant of a/1 he made crucial decisions in the staffing of
the department.
An active researcher and writer in his disci-
pline, and a leader in matters of community
mental health, Daniel Kirk was most of all an
educator, who challenged his students to
grow. In this he led by example, eschewing
the shallow and the fashionable, losing no
opportunity to satisfy an extraordinary spirit
of inquiry, and striving constantly against
that pusillanimous self-limitation which is
perhaps the greatest obstacle to the achieve-
ment of one's full potential.
He leaves behind for us a rich heritage.

Homecoming Victory For The Foxes
An 18-0 Homecoming victory over Brooklyn
College was the high point of Marist's '84
football season, raising its early season re-
cord to 3-2.
But
the Red Foxes soon lost their starting
quarterback to a hand injury and their prom-
ising season slide downhill. Although the
team finished with an overall record of 3- 7,
the excitement of a Homecoming victory left
a bright spot in in the '84 season.

42
Soccer
It was the longest toughest 18 game
schedule that a Marist soccer team has
had in quite some time.
At the beginning of the season Coach
Howard Goldman said that he was hop-
ing to win at least seven games. Well,
the Red Foxes did this and more by
finishing the 1984 campaign with a 9-7-
2 record.
Although the team was not selected in
the Metro Conference playoffs, the Red
Foxes finished the year as one of the top
10 teams in New York State

Finishing the season with an
overall record of 24-4, Marist's
women's volleyball assured itself
a place in the record books
.
Theirs was the best single-season
win record in Marist history.
It
was a hard climb to the top
-three coaches in four year and
a late start in '84, but the players
stuck together and worked as a
team. In the end, their work paid
off as they capped the season by
winning the Hudson Valley
Women's Athletic Conference
tournament and the ECAC Mid-
Atlantic Conference Champion-
ship.

FOOTPRINTS
One night I had a dream - - -
I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord and
Across the sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonged to me and the other to the Lord.
When the last
,
scene
-
of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that many times along the path of my life,
There was only one set of footprints.
I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and
saddest times in my life.
This really bothered me and I questioned the Lord about it,
"Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you,
You would walk with me all the way.
But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times
in my life
There were only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why in times when I needed you most
you should leave me."
The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child, I love you
and I would never, never leave you during your times of
trial and suffering.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you."

Why is this happening? I don't know why ... but it is
.
It's fading it seems, like a rainbow does as you try to
grow closer
.
I feel as though it went so fast. I'm having trouble
remembering the past ..
.
The good times and the bad seem so far away, but it's
over now just memories left
.
..
I'm not sad though it couldn't last. My eyes are dry ...
Why? Why? I can't cry- there's no need to. It's useless to
cry anyway.
What does it solve? Nothing usually. We had our fun
and shared a great deal. I can't forget the way I feel.
I can see you now, smiling at me as we wave good-bye,
but it's
,
never Good-bye only if one of us dies

It's a wave that says, I Love You and miss you and I'll
never forget you.
So go now and be happy, for that's what you truly
deserve.

EDITOR'S NOTE
Since coming to Marist in August, 1981 the Senior Class has
witnessed a number of dramatic changes on campus
.
Sometimes
it is hard to believe that this is the same school from which we
started our college careers
.
From the building of the Townhouses to the end of Western
Publishing and the birth of Maris! East; from the renovation of
the Old Gym to the New Res.; and from the Freshman dorms to
the North End -
the Class of '85 has experienced it all. A
growth process has taken place over the past four years, and we
have felt the growing pains as individuals, as a class and as an
institution.
In this 25th Anniversary Edition of the Reynard, we have tried
to capture some of the many memories of the past year and some
of the numerous changes that have taken place here at Marist.
Unfortunately, it is not feasible to include all of the experiences
that we have shared together, though the yearbook staff has
worked hard to incorporate as much as possible
.
Special thanks to Marie Healy and Paul Belliveau for the long:
hours and endless energy that they contributed to this book.
Without their help this book would not have been possible.
Congratulations to the Class of 1985, and the best of luck in the
future.
