In Memoriam: Br. Gregory Avina ('43) died October 11th at the Marist
Brothers retirement home in Miami. He was a member of the Esopus province.
Gregory was a native of Guadalajara, Mexico. He earned his B.A. in 1953 at St.
Mary's University, San Antonio, Texas. He taught or lived in Laredo, Brownsville,
Singapore, Rome, Molloy, Esopus, Roselle, and Miami. His favorite assignment
was teaching in Singapore. He was director at Maris Stella High School there. He
was fluent in five languages, including Mandarin. For a few years he served as
secretary to the Superior General, his classmate, Br. Basilio Rueda. Gregory was
76 years of age (born 10 September 1926) and was a Marist for 60 years. We pray
for his eternal happiness.
