Chronology: 1950-1959

A project undertaken by Brother Joseph J. R. Belanger based on previous work by Brother Leonard Voegtle and Adrian Perreault

“AA” below means only the completion of a minimum of 60 credits in the Scholasticate by 1930 or later. Marian/Marist College has never awarded AA degrees.

In 1950 Marian College receives its “absolute” charter from Albany. At the same time Albany reminds the Trustees that the college is authorized to admit lay students as well.

The General Chapter in Fall 1958 divides the USA Province of St. Ann in two: the Province of St. Ann and the Province of St. Joseph. The Chapter also decrees that no more religious names will be assigned at the taking of the Habit, and that vowed Brothers will choose which province to belong to and to retain their religious name or revert to their civil name.

In Fall 1959, at the suggestion of Bro. John Malachy Hoffmann, Director of Admissions, Marian College is re-named MARIST COLLEGE
