Marists All Editors
After serving as director of the Marist Institute of Theology at Marist College for two summers David Kammer (1942) took up teaching in the Litchfield (CT) Public School System. At one retirement age of 60, he joined the teaching staff at the Holy Cross Brothers’ high school in Waterbury, Connecticut, from which he retired at age 65 in 1986.
In Connecticut he was active in CCD and Renew programs.It was in the summer of 1986 that the idea of a newsletter that might address the wider Marist family developed. With the encouragement of the Greater Marist Community and of the provincials of both provinces, David joined Gus Nolan in organizing and promoting the project that became known as Marists All.
Now he rejoices at the expansion of MaristsAll to this web site under the talent and guidance of Richard Foy and is happy to see the interest and dedication of a younger generation in the person of Vincent Poisella, who has recently become the lead editor of the newsletter, and the recent addition of Rob Schmid to the editorial team.
Vince Poisella (1958) Marists All editor, as a Marist served as cook at the Esopus juniorate and as a teacher of English and religion at Roselle Catholic. He was involved in the Marist House program in La Porte, Indiana, in the late ‘60s along with John Brady, Pat Gallagher, and Eric Anderberg. In 1970 Vince married Jane Evans and lived in Hopatcong, NJ, for thirty years. They were blessed with three children: Mark, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and now living in Los Angeles; Eric, a graduate of Castleton State and now living outside of Des Moines, Iowa; and Anne, who graduated from Marist College now living in Manhattan. Jane and Vince, after retirement from full time roles as school librarian and supervisor of counseling and guidance services respectively, moved to Sea Oaks, a very active adult community in Little Egg Harbor, NJ. Vince is editor of the Sea Oaks Link, a monthly publication for his community. Active in his parish of St. Theresa’s, he is a member of the adult faith formation team and is a lector. He also coordinates a men’s spirituality discussion group and a small faith community group. Vince’s first contribution to Marists All appeared in its premier issue in response to David Kammer’s initial request in 1987. He assumed David’s role as editor beginning with issue #69 in September 2002.
Gus Nolan (1948) retired from full time teaching at Marist College in May, 1997 and has since taught two courses in each fall semester as a Professor Emeritus. In the winter months, January through March, he and his wife Elizabeth, lived in Hacienda Del Rio, Edgewater, Florida, but now winter in Naples Florida. Gus has remained active in Poughkeepsie All Sport where he focuses on racquetball and on a few Nautilus exercise machines. He works with David Kammer on all the issues of MaristsAll and is in constant contact with many members of the Greater Marist Community in the Mid-Hudson area. He also serves as a Eucharistic Minister at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie.
Richard Foy (1946) was a member of the fourth graduating class of Marian College to receive bachelor degrees is 1950. He then taught at Saint Ann's Academy in Manhattan NY for seven years, at Cardinal Hayes HS in Bronx NY for two years. He was named President of Marian College in November 1958. During his 21 years as President he guided its growth from 125 students to 2000+.
After leaving Marist College in 1979, Richard Foy became the Chief Operating Officer of Boyden World Corporation, a large executive search firm with 80% of its business outside the USA. He placed their extensive data records on computer, designed several accounting packages (he had been named Tresurer in February 1980). The position as COO required extensive travel, especially to Europe, South America and the Far East. Foy retired from that position at the end of the millennium, and filled his retirement hours with piano lessons and trips to the new Marist College Library where he plugged his laptop into the Internet. He was recruited to help out on an Ecommerce project and and taught computer science courses for two years, until his wife's illness prevented him from following rigid teaching scedules.
He worked under Brian Desilets on a Greater Marist Ccommunity heritage project that showed the influence of the Marist Brothers in the development of Marist College.
As a sideline, he researched the history of the Esopus property. His wife's ill health (and some of his own) restricted trips to Esopus and Poughkeepsie, so much of his recent research in conducted on the Internet from his home.
Mary and Rich moved back to Poughkeepsie on 21 November 2006, where their daughter Bridget, now a board certified family practice physician, had set up practice in East Fishkill and purchased a home in the town of Poughkeepsie. Sadly Mary died 19 December 2006. Bridget now practices in Ulster County, where she also supervises the residents at Kingston Hospital.
Richard has turned into a sports junkie, especially for the Marist College Women's Basketball Team, which reached the NCAA tournament six of the last seven years. But he also follows men's basketball, tennis, baseball, football and lacrosse, as well as women's volleyball, water polo, lacrosse and soccer.
Rich was responsible for designing the MaristsAll website, as well as the Esopus website, his family website, and several other webs of lesser interest to MaristsAll readers. He is also researching the history of the Marist College property, tracking some of the parcels back to the original patent of 1686.
Born in the Chicago suburb of Harvey, Illinois, Rob Schmid (1968) was a member of the charter class of Marist High School in Chicago. He entered the Brothers as a postulant in September 1967. The Brothers opened a formation house in Chicago that year, and five young men were introduced to religious life by brothers Martin Harte, Lawrence Keogh and Australian brother Ronald
Rob made his novitiate in Cold Spring, New York, and returned to Chicago to continue his college studies at DePaul University. Rob left the Brothers in January 1971, and began a career as a librarian upon graduating from Rosary College in 1973. He continued his career in librarianship until 1991. Upon noticing that he was in a dead-end job, Rob returned to school and managed to learn enough accounting to pass the CPA exam. In 1991, he began a new career as a revenue agent with the Internal Revenue Service.
Rob has been married to Judith for 25 years. They met in an archives class at Rosary College. Judi has continued her career in librarianship; she is the librarian at Elgin (Illinois) High School. Rob and Judi have lived in the Chicago area for their entire married life, and they have been blessed with two sons. The eldest, David graduated from Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois in June, and Bryan is a sophomore at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.
Rob and Judi have been active in their local parish activities, Rob still teaches CCD. Judi enjoys quilting, and they enjoy visiting quilt shops on their worldly travels. They hope that they can contribute to the Marists All family and continue the apostolate that has been established here.
