Obituary-Reverend Charles W Hartling

Rev. Charles W. Hartling (Father Chuck) of Rutherford, N.J., entered into eternal rest on June 25, 2012. Visitation will be on Thursday, June 28, 2012, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Macagna Diffily Onorato Funeral Home, 41 Ames Ave. Rutherford, N.J., and on Friday, June 29, 2012, from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Mary R.C. Church, Rutherford, N.J., with a Vigil Mass at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday, June 30, 2012, at St. Mary R.C. Church at 10:30 a.m. Private interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, N.J.
Father Chuck was born on Jan. 26, 1941 , in the Bronx, N.Y. He graduated from St. Helena Parochial School in the Bronx. He attended Parish High School for two years, where he was taught by the Marist Brothers. His third and fourth years of high school were completed at Marist Preparatory High School in Esopus, N.Y. Father Chuck attended St. Joseph Novitiate in Tyngsboro, Mass., then Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where he obtained a B.A. in Latin. He spent three summers at Seattle University in Washington, where he obtained a master's degree in religion.
He became a Marist Brother in 1959. In 1963 Father Chuck was assigned to teach at Roselle Catholic High School in Roselle, N.J., where he taught Latin, Religion, Spanish, and Introduction to Psychology until 1976. He then entered into Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington, N.J. He worked for Union County CYO Office as an assistant program director and coordinator for the Crossroads Program. Father Chuck spent the summer of 1978 at St. Paul's in Ramsey, N.J., doing his deacon internship. He was ordained on May 26, 1979, at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Newark, N.J., by Archbishop Gerety. Father Chuck was assigned to Holy Spirit Church in Union, N.J., as assistant pastor from 1979 to 1993.
From there he was sent to St. Elizabeth Church, Wyckoff, N.J., where he served as assistant pastor, Pre-Cana director and drama club director from 1993 to 1999. In June of 1999 Father Chuck was assigned to St. Mary's Church in Rutherford, N.J., where he was parochial vicar; a faculty member of St. Mary's High School, teaching Religion and Latin; Drama Club director, and spiritual adviser to St. Mary's High School football team. He retired in December 2011. Throughout the years, Father Chuck enjoyed many activities, including ice hockey, skiing, Broadway, golf, reading and family.
