Stephen S. Sheridan, 86, of Cedar Woods, formerly of Harbour Village, Branford, passed to his eternal rest on Sunday February 13, 2011 at CT Hospice, Branford. He was the devoted husband to Edythe M. Sheridan and loving step-father of Kathleen A. Mate of Riverside, CA. He is also survived by his sister Margaret McAleer of Hempstead, NY, and his sister-in-law Gladys Sheridan of Valley Stream, NY, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his loved step-son Kevin P. Mate, his brother, Philip S. Sheridan, and his nephew Stephen McAleer.

Mr. Sheridan was born January 25, 1925 in Woodside, LI, NY, son of the late Stephen J. and Margaret A. (O'Donnell) Sheridan. He was a retired teacher having spent 48 years in the classroom as well as in educational administrative positions in both high school and college.

He held B.A. and M.A. degrees from Fordham University in New York as well as advanced administrative degrees from SCSU. He occupied administrative positions at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY, as well as at Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, MA.

The latter 24 years of his educational career were spent as a teacher of American History and Western Philosophy at Branford High School where he was also History Department Chairman. Upon retirement he was a volunteer at Connecticut Hospice.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Friday morning at 11:00 in St. Mary Church, Branford. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Branford. THERE ARE NO CALLING HOURS. Steve (or Hugh as I remember you)

We lost touch over the last two decades, but I want you to know what a great job you did at Marist College for the young student Brothers. It was a time of turmoil, and you handled a difficult situation gracefully.
Knowing you handled that situation so nicely, I don't doubt that your subsequent activities in education were just as caring and rewarding to the many persons you touched in vital times of their lives.

I believe that Stephen Sheridan was Brother Hugh Ephrem. If so, he was my freshman homeroom teacher at St. Ann's in 1952. As I lived in Jackson Heights the town next to Woodside, I still recall how excited I was to see my teacher walking with his parents in my neighborhood on a Sunday afternoon. I believe he also taught me French. Unfortunately, I am now in California getting ready to teach my first course at Chapman University. All the good things that I learned from the Brothers and as a Brother myself stay with me.
