Alice Mary Mason VandeWater
Alice Mason married John Boyce Vandewater on January 15, 1917. Her mother and father were dead, her older sister Hilda was married and living in Philadelphia, and her younger sister, Dorothy Edna was the ward of Miss Emma C Larson who relocated later in 1917 to Staatsburg, NY. With no known Mason relatives in the United States, one may assume that she is more associated with the Vandewater group than the Mason family.
The couple first lived in Hyde Park. Shortly after their marriage (circa 1919) the couple purchased the house at 125 South Hamilton Street, Poughkeepsie NY, a few houses away from the Poughkeepsie Tennis Club. They added space behind the house along Holmes Street in 1923.They remained there for most of their married life, while John became the lead person in a prominent law firm later called Vandewater & Vandewater.
In the early 1950s the couple explored several options to relocate within the city of Poughkeeopsie. They purchased the grounds under 22 Thornwood drive in 1952 and added addition property there in 1958. Their newly cnstructed house was a single floor, making navigation simpler for older persons.
Alice and John Vandewater had two children John (1917 -1993) and Robert (1921 - 1990). John married Julia Frances Chatterton of Newburgh NY, and the couple had two daughters, Julie and Margaret. Robert married Elizabeth Peelor.
