Hubert "Hube" Glendon

Columbia's Lightweight (150 lb) Crew Coach 1927-1933

Columbia's Head Crew Coach 1934-1947

Hubert Glendon was the youngest son in the Glendon rowing family, his father was the well-known coach of Navy's crews who won Olympic gold in 1920 and his brother coached the Columbia crews to stunning victories on the Hudson in the late 1920s.  Hubert or Hube as he was known became coach of the lightweight (150 lb) crews at Columbia in 1927, which did not compete at Poughkeepsie.  These crews did very well under Hube, winning the Marlow cup in England and reaching the semifinals in the Henley Regatta.

Upon the death of his brother, Richard J. Glendon Jr. in 1934, Hube was named head of the Columbia crews and his father came on to coach the lightweight crews.  Hube retired from Columbia in 1947 to work in real estate.  He passed away in May 1975 at the age of 72. Before his death, Hube donated Glendon Beach, which was named for his family to the town of Dennis Port, MA.
