“More camels were used in this campaign than had ever been gathered together before in the history of the world. Allenby used over 60,000 of them. He brought them from Tibet, India, Afghanistan, Baluchistan, Persia, Arabia and all parts of North Africa. Before the war the camel was an animal of mystery, and whenever one was wounded or taken sick it was simply allowed to roll over and die. Allenby had combed the whole world for camels, and he lost so many that scientists were brought out to make a special study of the camel, and they established great camel hospitals in the desert, and actually succeeded in saving the lives of over sixty per cent of all the camels that were sent back from the front.”
